One Owner Find: 1971 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

It’s rare – in one man’s opinion – to see a honest Karmann Ghia in stock, survivor-grade condition. We see plenty on the opposite ends of each spectrum, from over-restored “Cal-look” editions to completed roached projects selling for too much money. This 1971 model here on craigslist fall right in the middle as an unrestored survivor that appears to have been loved by its one owner.

The seller needs some tutoring on how to spell the word “Karmann”, but that aside, this is a very nice looking example – especially if the floors are solid. The bucket seats show lovely bolstering, and likely have been re-upholstered at some point. Although the red-piped floormats match the exterior, I’d love to see some of the new Coco “Checkers” mats inside. The original steering wheel is nice to see, along with minty wood-veneer on the dash.

The seller claims it runs and drives well and that the motor and transmission are original to the car. No details are offered on maintenance history, but one would like to assume that if it remained in one owner’s care for so many years, it was carefully looked after in the meantime. The seller does mention that a large assortment of original paperwork is included, such as the build sheet and owner’s manual, along with the factory tool kit.

The paint looks consistent and original, but there’s no way to be sure without measuring depth. The hubcaps are matching and accounted for, and the shut lines appear excellent. The Karmann Ghia is in Clearwater, and if the next buyer is flying in or staying local, be sure to coordinate pick-up with the excellent Pass-A-Grille VW Beach Bash, happening on October 20. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Patrick S. for the find.

This KG looks well cared for except for some road and engine compartment grime. Seems like a great deal to me.

Coco is a type of floor mat. I have a set in my 69 Beetle.

Just don’t try to smoke ‘m. If you used the coco mats in an open car, then it is advised that you wear the required string-back driving cloves. Otherwise… it just wouldn’t be civilized.

Coco is a brand name of cocoa fiber floor mats. Cocoa fiber is made from the husks of coconuts. i live 100 miles South of Clearwater. Fly into Tampa, inspect, buy and arrange shipping. Fly home. If it is rust free, and you want one; you had better jump on it.

Years ago I remember reading in Car and Driver a comparison test between a Ghia and a Triumph Spitfire. The Ghia was actually faster with an 89 MPH top speed compared to the Spitfire s 87.

One solid day of cutting, buffing and polishing and that Karmann Ghia would look spectacular.

This is how I prefer cars and would be my choice over any I’ve seen lately. I hope someone here scoops it up!

Am I misremembering or did the back seat fold down to reveal a small storage area?

Yep, it folded. Also, removing it gave you access to the starter…

Thanks for verifying that. Good to know that all of that Jack Daniels hasn’t destroyed all of my brain cells.
