One-Owner Survivor: 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Listed here on eBay, this 1982 Pontiac Trans Am is a rare find, a true one-owner, all-original survivor showing only 9,719 miles since new. The seller notes that it’s been garage kept its entire life, and from the photos, it certainly looks the part. This Trans Am represents the very first year of the third-generation Firebird, a car that helped define early-’80s performance and style.

Power comes from its original 5.0-liter V8 engine paired with an automatic transmission, both said to run strong and smooth. The seller emphasizes that this car has never been restored or modified in any way, it’s exactly as it left the factory, down to the decals, trim, and interior details.

The photos show a clean, glossy red Trans Am that’s been clearly stored with care. The finish shines, the body appears straight, and the factory wheels and graphics still look excellent. Inside, the black interior remains intact and in impressive shape, with seat covers on the front seats, for a 43-year-old vehicle. All lights, accessories, and even the pop-up headlights are said to function properly.

The 1982 Trans Am introduced Pontiac’s aerodynamic redesign for the Firebird, complete with the distinctive flip-up headlamps, sleek wedge body lines, and integrated rear spoiler. It marked a major step forward for the brand and helped cement the model’s legacy well into the decade that followed.

With such low mileage and single ownership history, this car checks every box for collectors who value originality. The seller holds a clean title, and the car’s survivor status makes it particularly appealing in a world where so many examples have been modified or neglected.

It’s rare enough to find a third-gen Trans Am this untouched, but finding one owned by the same person since day one, and with under 10,000 miles, is practically unheard of. Would you preserve this Trans Am as a time capsule, or would you enjoy it on the open road like it was meant to be driven?

They just don’t look right without the optional “power bulge” hood (which was also available in aluminum!). Great car, mine looked that nice when I bought it in 1985. Mine has been driven hard and enjoyed since then!

If I recall, the factory had issues with inventory on the power bulge hood used with the induction system. I’ve had 2 1982 Trans Ams, and one had the flat hood like this one. In fact, both were red with the charcoal interior! I like the spec, as it’s the brochure car for the model.

I sold my low-miles excellent condition ’82 a couple of years ago and regret it. I think the third-gen Firebird is one of GM’s most beautiful designs, especially the early cars.

I hope it had some maintenance. Fluids weren’t meant to last 43 years.

Hahha, I remember my old ‘74 Bonneville as a teenager. “Huh, you have to change transmission fluid???”

I know better now of course…

If the transmission fluid is a normal color, it’s fine to change it. Brake fluid and antifreeze need to be changed on a schedule. Oil should, to some extent, too. Then there are the tires. After 5-6 years, they start to dry rot.

I had the exact same version (Flat hood) but in light blue exterior/Dark Blue interior.

Loved it, but it did have a couple of issues, The disc hubcaps eventually wore and got loose and I had to remove them. The rear disc brake would not self adjust but I finally figure out you needed to use the Emergency brake often which adjusted them.

I was in my mid 20’s and that car was a true chick magnet LOL. Ton’s of fun was had!!

You sure it wasn’t the mullet that attracted the ladies?
Just kidding, playing off of that old cliche.

My first thought was to take off the seat covers too. Very nice clean Pontiac here. Just wondered why the pictures were taken with the car in neutral.

I had one back in 2008 until it got into an accident

Really loved the design on these years and overall it looks really nice. Looks like the owner may have bought some new front lower fascia inserts to replace the accident/ age damaged originals. There does seem to be some sort of damage on the inside rear passenger left side panel. I’d also want to see those front seats minus the covers.

These weren’t great cars in 82 and 43 years doesn’t change that

I have a white 83 trans Am and am the second owner. Not rusted as a lot of them are. Has the bulged hood. Love it as much today as when I bought it nearly 40 yrs ago. Has plenty of power but who needs big horsepower for pleasure driving and cruising? Only 78,000 miles.I am 76 and it will be passed on to my son who enjoys it as much as I do.
