Open to Trades: 1985 Toyota Supra 5-Speed

If you aspire to own a Toyota Supra that captures the car in perhaps its most charming form (note: charming does not mean fastest), then the second generation A60 model is likely the one to buy. Fender flares, pop-up headlights, fat wheels, great seats, and a sonorous inline-six that is deeply underappreciated by enthusiasts – well, it all combines to make for a fairly captivating ride. The car shown here is a 1985 model, equipped with the preferred 5-speed manual and listed here on craigslist for $6,300. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Barney for the find.

When people think of the Supra these days, it’s easy to hop right on down to the MKIV Supra. This is when turbocharging really became a central theme to modifying sport compact cars, and the Supra was the granddaddy of them all. Of course, its wild profile helped, too, with the massive rear spoiler, a targa-style roof panel, and loud chrome 5-spoke wheels, it was anything but subtle. The MK2 Supra shown here was fairly loud in its own right back in the day, but a naturally-aspirated inline-six didn’t have quite the same shock value as the later car’s boosted powerplant. Side note: the seats in this era Supra are absolutely wonderful, and worth a mint if you find a clean set in the boneyard.

Toyota’s 5M-GE and 7M-GE engines, in my opinion, are unsung heroes in Toyota’s history. Many enthusiasts tend to fawn over BMW and Mercedes-Benz for making phenomenal inline sixes, and those companies certainly do – but it’s a shame that Toyota’s offering is overlooked by so many. By my estimation, this Supra – as a 1985 model – should have the earlier 5M-Ge engine installed. However, this appears to be a 7M-GE which came after the introduction of the 1986 model year vehicles. You’d find the 7M in cars like the third-generation Supra and the second generation Cressida sedan, so this Supra likely had its original motor swapped out. The seller does mention the engine has been rebuilt.

The bodywork appears fairly tidy, with paint in average condition. The seller is located in Portland, OR so it’s somewhat safe to assume this sports coupe hasn’t been exposed to years’ worth of salt-crusted roads, which led to the demise of many vintage Japanese cars and trucks. The seller doesn’t offer a ton of info, but it’s clear this Supra is a driver, with old window tint and some rough edges here and there. However, he seems flexible in terms of what it will take to pry this stock Supra out of his hands, so perhaps an offer of $5K will bring it home. Which generation of Supra is your favorite?

    This in my fav generation. I bought a blue one in 86 and drove the wheels off of it. 400k miles and still going strong until a 4dr Mercedes decided to run a red light. The crumple zone on the Supra worked as designed so I was not injured but the car was totaled. that was in 2000. I kept the car just because of sentimentality. I also bought an El Camino new in 1987. I used it for hauling small loads around the farm. When i wrecked the Toyo I decided the split bench in the Elco needed to be replaced with buckets. I built frames for the Supra seats and installed them in the Elco. The best upgrade ever for the Elco which now has 747k miles on it. If you can find some of these bucket seats.. grab them.

    You are correct. This originally came with the 5M-GE straight 6 and has been swapped with an 86+ 7M-GE. The original radio is a plus and he states it is originally an AZ car (like mine) which is the best place to find these classics. The seats, with design help from Recaro, were the best of the era and helped make the 2nd gen Celica Supra the most stolen car in many areas. Including my county on the East Coast when my uncle was the sheriff. They would be found later missing only the seats.

    I worked at a Toyota Store when these came out. I love them.Good handling comfortable cars with reasonable performance. They feel heavy, but so does the Celica GTS. I would grab one of these in a heat beat.

    Ok yes these were fun cars to drive I personally think the asking price is on the higher side considering the mileage but otherwise nice ride

    These cars like most Toyotas were bullet proof! They shared the engine and suspension with the Cressida, Toyota’s luxury cruiser. I went to buy one with my fiancé. It drove great but the back seat was minimal. We then drove the Cressida and was blown away that it felt like the same car but with a generous back seat. After some thought, we bought the Cressida and had that for 20+ years and over 200K miles, absolutely the best car I have ever owned!!

      CC the rwd Cressida is one of my all time favorite cars I’ve ever driven. So comfortable and smooth. And a blast fishtailing around in winter ❄️ 🐟

    My favorite body style and the lines in it for some reason make this body along with the Celica GTS the only cars I have ever liked in the color White.

    My mom had a 1985 GT Celica that shares the same design & body panels as this car but had the 22R motor & 5 speed & I was thoroughly impressed with everything about it even its performance having drove everything from a big block 454 to Pontiac TransAm T/A 6.6 of course totally different type of vehicles the Toyota had many positive attributes that I’m sure this car has. I wish I wasn’t 2000 miles away!

    Behind the MkIV Supras, this is my favorite body style. I like the angular good looks, and for some weird reason, the double spoilers in the back kind of remind me of the Mad Max interceptor.

    Kind of weird that it has 0 miles? I wonder how it runs. If it runs well then I would just clean it up and enjoy it. Too bad it doesn’t appear to have a sunroof. One of my friends bought one new in 1986 and he loved it. His with white with a blue interior. Was a very smooth riding car with a lot of bells and whistles compared to other cars at the time. I always enjoy looking at this model Supra.

    Don’t forget these also had headlight washers. I had an 84 and my brother had an 82. I still have a set of cam covers from a parts car my brother had hanging on my garage wall and an HKS CAI I bought for mine sitting in my basement.
