Original 396 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Chevrolet introduced its Fourth Gen Impala in ’65 and continued production for 5 years. The cars underwent a facelift and some design shifts, all resulting in a very appealing platform. This 1966 Chevrolet Impala is a luxury classic with big muscle. It’s a numbers-matching car, which is always a plus and is in decent enough shape to drive home after purchase. The car maintains some of its original parts and pieces while having been restored where needed. It is for sale on craigslist in Eugene, Oregon, for $33,800. Thanks to Tony Primo for the tip!

The exterior is finished in Ermine white. The white is a repaint and presents very well. The owner has done restoration when needed, including the windshield and back window. It’s sleek, long, and has all the energy a muscle car from the ’60s should have. I’m biased, but I can’t think of a more stylish ’60s American model than the Impala; they have that “it” factor, and luckily, for any potential buyers, this one has maintained its looks.

The car’s blue interior is in great condition, and no doubt transports its driver to 1966. The seller has gone through and restored the interior where it was needed. They replaced the dash pad, redid the seats, added a new carpet with a sound deadener installed, and added a new retro stereo with front and rear speakers. It is exceptionally clean.

The Impala’s original rebuilt engine sends 305 horsepower to the wheels via a serviced 4-speed manual transmission. The seller added a new stainless steel exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers so the neighborhood knows when the car is cruising by. This is a beautiful classic car in good shape. While it doesn’t need much work, the next buyer has room to tweak things as they see fit. If you want to add an Impala with a very cool color combination and plenty of power to your collection, contact the seller on craigslist.

Those look like Caprice taillights.I don’t recall Impala’s
    using them.
    Once again,nice car,but a lot of $$$$.

They are indeed! A small custom touch, easily reversible.

Correct… incorrect taillamps for an impala. Caprice lamps are sharp, but look out of place here.

Boy does this bring back some great memories. I know I’ve mentioned it before on here. But I’m going to do it again anyway. With the exception of the 4 speed and wheel covers and Caprice tail lights (AngliaGT great call out!!! I knew something was different and just kept missing that. ) This is like my Grandpas ’66 Impala SS, 396 325 horse THM 400. White, blue interior. Grandpa was getting his ( also white with blue interior) ’64 Impala 2 door hardtop (327 powerglide) serviced at Lexington Chevrolet. He was walking on the lot, and saw it, and said, “I just gotta have one of those!!!” He went in and bought it. When the service rep found him to hand him his keys to his ’64, he said, ” Its yours now, I just traded it in on that.” He loved that car. He had quite a number of Chevrolets over the years, but no matter what, till his dieing day, he always reffered to that ’66 as ,”The Chevy”. Seeing those seats, dash, and steering wheel takes me back to my childhood. I loved the fact it didnt have a steering wheel lock and I could turn it and pretend to drive.
Boy, just to turn back time, and go back one day, just one day. I miss him, deeply, even though he’s gone 24 years now. Every time I come across any ’66 Impala, especially if its in this color and has a 396 in it I just stop, and look and go back in time.
Beautiful find, great write up Sara, thank you for posting it, and the great memories you’ve jogged.

You can see what the tailights were like on his car. I like the upgrade on this one and I’d keep it too.

My first car back in1971 was a red 65 Impala SS 327 4 barrel with black leather interior, automatic transmission. It was a quick car and enjoyed it very much.

I still fondly remember when our next-door neighbors
went to the boat show in San Francisco,& came home with
a brand new Impala in Lipstick Red,& a new boat/trailer.
    Another great styled car!

From what I see price is actually reasonable from what I see rotting out mopars with drivetrains missing. Or mustangs that need total restoration.
Alot to like here. Big block 4 speed buckets console with gages. Seen alot worse going for more. Buy it drive it enjoy it!

    396 / 325 hp
    Never heard of a 305 version…definitely a misprint
Nice car, I’d leave the incorrect taillights for now and get on Route 66 this spring and cruise.

Nice Chevy but it needs all that 396 cubic inches to move that weight. Not a race car by any means but its in great condition!

I would have expected to see more SS badges on it, especially in the interior, no?

I might be wrong, but I believe the only SS badging on the 66 Impala SS is on the glove box.

This is a really nice car, but there’s something screwy going on. First thing are the SS badges, (or rather the lack of them) A ’66 Impala Super Sport has SS emblems on the grill, the front fenders, the deck lid, and the glove box door. The other thing is the Caprice tail lights. If this car is being marketed as a true SS, then it is being misrepresented. Even as nice as it is, not being a true SS will affect the value.

I think it more likely that car was painted at some point and emblems weren’t reinstalled and tail lights added. Makes more sense to me than someone adding buckets, console, gauges etc to an Impala. I had a 66 Impala (non-SS) with 327/4spd for a while. I’d bet there were fewer non-SS 4 speeds than actual Super Sports.

ChrisClose: I believe that you may be correct. I was looking at the photos on my phone, but after enhancing them on my monitor, and even though they are grainy, it does appear like all the correct emblems are present.

I found humor in it also because I have the same car with 425hp 427 and the clock works “sometimes”

The 396 made a minimum of 325HP in the big, 1966 Chevrolets.
