Original 440: 1970 Dodge Charger R/T 440

Occasionally, classic cars come along that aren’t necessarily trailer queens but are jaw-droppingly clean. This 1970 Dodge Charger R/T 440 is just such a car because while it might not be of show quality, it is a car that anyone could own and display with an immense sense of pride. This rust-free beauty is now looking for a new home, and I would be willing to bet that we will have plenty of Barn Finds readers who would like nothing more than to park it in their driveway or garage. If you happen to be one of those people, then you will find the Charger located in Kissimmee, Florida, and listed for sale here on eBay. The BIN price for this piece of Mopar muscle has been set at $52,500.

The Charger comes finished in Dark Burnt Orange, but it isn’t clear whether the paint is original, or whether the vehicle has received a repaint at some point in its life. The Orange has been complemented by a Black vinyl top and Black transverse stripe. The paint has a great shine to it, while the vinyl top appears to be in near-perfect condition. Rust does not seem to be an issue with this classic. The panels look to be spotlessly clean, while the owner provides plenty of clear photos of the vehicle’s underside. The floors wear the sort of dust that you might expect to find on a car that has seen some normal use, but there is not a spot of rust to be seen anywhere. The same is true of the front and rear rails, indicating that this is one very solid car. The grille and headlight covers appear to be in good condition, as does the exterior trim, chrome, and badges. The Charger is fitted with Magnum 500 wheels, and these look to be in as-new condition.

The Burnt Orange theme continues when you open the doors and climb inside the Charger. What you are confronted with is Burnt Orange vinyl upholstery and carpet, bucket seats, and a console with wood-grain trim that also carries over to the dash. The interior trim is said to all be original, and if this is true, then it has survived the past 50-years very well. There are no signs of any rips or splits in the upholstery or headliner. The carpet looks surprisingly good, while the wheel rim, console, dash, and pad all appear to be free of cracks or defects. As you would expect, the original Rally gauges are present, and no matter how much I zoom in on the photo, I can’t be sure if this also features a Tic-Toc-Tach. What I can see for sure is that the original 2-watt AM radio is gone, and an aftermarket unit occupies its spot in the dash. Otherwise, the interior appears to have remained essentially unmolested.

Now we get to the aspect of this car that makes it something special. Resting under the hood is the option E86, 440ci V8. That beast pumps out 375hp, which is sent to the rear wheels via the Heavy-Duty automatic transmission. The Charger also features power steering and power brakes. The owner claims that this is a full, numbers-matching car, and it even comes complete with its original Broadcast Sheet. This is a car that is designed to grab your attention the very moment that you bury your right foot. It is capable of sprinting from 0-60 in 6.1 seconds, while it only takes 14.4 seconds for a ¼ mile to become a distant memory. We don’t know whether the Charger has been treated to any significant mechanical work throughout its life, but what we do know is the fact that the car is said to run, drive, and stop, perfectly.

What a car. It is a classic that would seem to tick a lot of the right boxes. It presents well, it’s rust-free, and it is a numbers-matching piece of Mopar muscle. The owner is asking $52,500 for the car, so I guess that we have to ask whether it is worth that sort of money? Given the growth in popularity of the Charger R/T and the resultant increase in values, I think that on face value, it would certainly seem as though it is. Of course, a personal inspection would be the best bet to confirm this. And finally, forget about parking this in your garage. If I owned it, I’d have it out in the driveway for everyone to admire!

I couldn’t do that! Go as a spectator I mean. Like sending a drunk to a bar with no money. All you can do is look & drool.

Beautiful car! I hope the (lucky) new owner doesn’t do anything other than drive the wheels off it.

2 great dodges in one week. Only thing better would be if they were 6 packs.

Do they not make black replacement hoses in US these days or were the red ones shown original?

Beautiful. I love everything about it: the burnt orange, the black vinyl top and the black stripe on the rear. Do want!

I have Made in USA black and China hoses. Doing a test to see which lasts longer. Did similar with wheel bearings at Riverside raceway in the early 80’s. American made Timken never had an issue. Offshore bearings had varied problems.
My 70 Burnt Orange Charger RT had a white longitudinal stripe and Factory Air.
My son had a Red 70/RT, non air.
Our family worked at St Louis assembly and built these

Really nice example and the color is the best!! The only thing that could have topped it would be if it were a 4 speed car!!!

I don’t know why but Dodge/Plymouth always had the coolest air cleaners, always liked that dual snorkel set up. Cars not bad either.
