Original 455: 1974 Pontiac Grand Prix Model SJ

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1974 Pontiac Grand Prix Model SJ isn’t perfect, but it is an extremely tidy, rust-free survivor. The ace up its sleeve could be the 455ci V8 under the hood, providing excellent performance by the standard of the period. The new owner may choose to undertake a light cosmetic refresh, although preservation is a viable option. The seller has listed the Grand Prix here on eBay in Utica, Michigan. They set their BIN at $12,500 with the option to make an offer.

Pontiac released its Fourth Generation Grand Prix range in 1973, with our feature car leaving the factory in 1974. The first owner ordered this classic in Pinemist Green, foregoing the vinyl top that was a popular factory option. Interestingly, this car does feature a steel power sunroof for those who prefer fresh air over A/C. The presentation looks good in the supplied images, and the seller admits that a close inspection will reveal minor marks and blemishes. However, what this car lacks is rust, with the seller confirming that it is rock-solid. The panels are straight, and the tinted glass is clear. I can’t spot any trim issues, and this Grand Prix rolls on a clean set of Rally II wheels.

While 1974 Grand Prix buyers received the company’s 400ci V8 as the standard motor, this car’s first owner went straight to the top shelf, ticking the box beside the 455ci powerplant on their Order Form. A three-speed automatic transmission was standard equipment, as were power steering and power-assisted front disc brakes. It is fair to say that this was the last year that the Grand Prix provided performance credentials. The 455 placed 250hp and 380 ft/lbs of torque at the driver’s disposal, with both figures dropping significantly the following year. The seller confirms that this classic is numbers-matching. They state that the motor springs to life at a twist of the key, and that the car runs and drives well. Once the buyer hands over the cash, it appears they can slip behind the wheel and set their sights on the horizon.

This Pontiac’s interior looks extremely tidy for a fifty-two-year-old classic trimmed in Parchment vinyl. Some components have developed yellowing, but there are no rips, splits, or other upholstery issues. The contrasting Black carpet looks acceptable for a driver-grade classic, and the dash and pad are clean. Pontiac focused on luxury with the Grand Prix, and this car delivers in a 1974 context. The buyer receives the previously-mentioned sunroof, air conditioning, power windows, power seats, cruise control, and a tilt wheel. The factory radio is intact, and an aftermarket unit hides in the glovebox.

While it isn’t perfect, this 1974 Pontiac Grand Prix Model SJ presents well, with its overall condition consistent with its survivor credentials. Although values fell in 2025, the market has stabilized, making the seller’s BIN figure look very competitive. Of course, the situation could improve if they are flexible negotiators. With Pontiac a distant memory, are you tempted to do your bit to preserve the marque’s legacy by giving this Grand Prix a new home? I will understand if you do.

Love the 73 and 74 GPs. Single headlamp and other features are nice looking.

Nice car. I owned a 74 Grand Prix J. White interior w/ bucket seats. No power windows or locks, but a cold AC and a kicking aftermarket in dash stereo. 400 ci with quadrajet and dual exhaust. If I recall correctly, it did like a high 17 second quarter mile at the local track one time on a lark. That wasn’t it’s place of course. It’s place was pointing that long nose down the road and letting it carry you in comfort. Or hanging out with friends, perched on the hood with feet resting on that bumper. I would almost consider buying this.
