Original Paint: 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 Convertible

Chevrolet built a sizeable supply of SS 396 Chevelle’s for 1967, including some 3,307 convertibles. Most of them were equipped with the 350-horse version of the big-block motor (15% had the 375-hp engine). The SS 396 had been promoted to series status the year before and would continue as such through 1968. This numbers-matching ’67 Chevelle looks awesome with its shiny blue paint, white convertible top and black interior. The car appears to reside in a storage unit in Sarasota and is available here on eBay where the bidding has gotten to $37,100 (no reserve).

The Chevelle was in its fourth year in 1967, Chevy’s entrant into the mid-size market in response to the downsized Ford Fairlane. For the SS editions, coupe and convertible, the car builder would use reinforced Malibu front suspensions and frames to deal with the torque and horsepower that would accompany the 396 V8. The seller’s car was built in May 1967 at the Bow-Tie folks’ Fremont, California plant and stayed in that state for a while. It would end up in a barn in Helena, Montana before the seller found and bought it.

We’re told that all the sheet metal is original as is the F-1 Marine Blue paint. There has been no body damage reported other than where someone backed into it once in the passenger door and rear quarter, although no photos show this. The seller says he’ll add more photos of the car, but for now most of the exterior shots are from within a storage unit. Inside the car, it was equipped with a bench seat from the factory rather than bucket seats. We don’t know if the upholstery is original, but it certainly could be. The manually operated top was recently replaced in the original color.

For the purists in our midst, the car is numbers-matching, so the 396/350-hp engine and the M-21 4-speed manual date back to ‘67. A 12-bolt posi-traction rear end sits out back. The mileage on the car is not stated, but it could be low given the general condition of the car. The car’s original LIST-3837 Holley 4-barrel carburetor survives and has been professionally rebuilt. The motor has been treated to a tune-up, including new plugs, wires and a distributor cap. We’re told the car is a strong runner and the tranny shifts smoothly.

1967 SS 396 coupes in this kind of condition are running north off $50,000 online. Because of the relative scarcity of drop-tips compared to hardtops, you’d think that convertibles would go even higher. This car looks like the real deal and has been well-treated, so who knows how far the bidding here may go.

    that hood photo, which sports a pretty nice gap, is gorgeous. If this is the original paint, someone LOVED this car. Wow. Too bad it’s not the 375 horse, but I would have this in my driveway in a second. Nice. If this had a cassette or CD player, I would be cruising with ‘Blackfoot’ coming from the speakers…

    Talk about rare, my friend bought a new ’67 Chevelle conv. with a bench seat, 283 cu 4 speed. That puppy may have been one of a kind. (my friend is a bit weird and decided on the 4 gear since his summer job was driving a 4 speed Coke truck. When he admired my new Impala 3 speed on the tree I offered to let him drive it but he said he didn’t know how to drive stick on the column)

    I love the blinker Tach. Very cool option. These are good looking cars with the marina blue paint. Close friend has a marina blue with blue interior block power top with a 327 4spd. I always loved these cars.

    Had 5 of the 67 Chevelle’s and 2 El Camano’s all small blocks except one El Camano was 396 4 speed 360 horse .Loved those cars, and why I didn’t keep at least one I don’t know .They are my favorite cars.

    Nice car,but I sure miss my younger days, I had a 67 chevelle Malibu 300 2 door post,no rust,230 turbo thrift 6 and powerglide that had 50k on it and only paid $300,that was of course in 1988!

    Bids already over $50K with 51 bids out of a dozen or so bidders leads me to believe that she has been checked out and is pretty legit. The sky is the limit on this one.

    I had one years back and got rid of it, very sad and dumb. I have never seen another on like it since. It was factory white with a blue interior and a medium blue convertible top. 325hp

    I don’t want to bash this Chevelle ’cause I really like it, nice specs,colors and all… but when someone steps forward claiming all OE paint on a 54year old car I’m always sceptical, and in this price range I think we have the right to be. Does he mean NO panels have been refurbished ever…?

    I’m curious whether the somewhat crudely finished firewall area around the cowl tag is how GM sold it. There’s blue paint on the underside of the hood sheet metal while the supportive frame is black – on my GM cars from the era with a correctly black underside there’s been a uniform black coating. Also seems to be blue paint residue on the washer nozzle/bracket.

    I’m not necessarily claiming these panels have been repainted – this kind of questions would also be relevant as to learning exactly what kind of finish level GM would find acceptable back when these cars left their respective plants. If this is legit GM finish it’d be another testimony many cars of the 60s are being over-restored today

      No you are correct – the firewall has received a repaint and also the motor soooo – from the pictures just not so sure the car hasn’t been repainted. Did someone say quarter panel and door damage ? Buyer beware…..

    Funny looking 8 guys… why is it the only digit that looks questionable?, in my opinion at least. Might be trying to cash in on a 133 300 deluxe car, maybe not who knows.
    This is why 70% of car people don’t agree for one to buy a Swiss cheese, roaches,rusted to nothing pile of nothing just for vin and cowl tags..
    My grandma bought this same car,SS,convertible, interior and exterior color but the fun stopped when the hood got lifted to reveal the 6 banger bolted to the glide .What a teaser that car 😎

      But a 6 banger old car TODAY almost guarantees u are getting what u r payin for!!! – a numbers matchin car – who in their right mind would put in another 6(still would not lower the value) or a 6 to replace a v8? lol
      Plus it’s hard to abuse/twist a car body with a 6 & a glide.
      & even if you try, you are unlikely to damage even the motor or trans. lol

    38 Chevy Coupe guy… The vin looks 100% correct. It’s apparent you were uneducated white color for two 1967 Chevy. A quick Google search of the Fremont Vin stamp would confirm vin tag is 💯 correct

    Do storage complexes allow you to work on your old car sitting inside a storage unit – even with the door down? Not sure if you can bring/operate a space heater in the winter in one, tho – they might notice the lectric meter spinning lot faster than usual. lol
