The Pontiac GTO enjoyed its second-best sales year in 1967, even though it was down 15% over the record 1966 model run. With subtle styling updates in ‘67, the biggest “news” may have been the retirement of the 389 cubic inch V8 with “Tri-Power”, replaced by a new 400 that came in four set-up possibilities. The seller has what may be a low-mileage ’67 convertible sporting a Trans Am engine and the need for new paint. Located in Floral Park, New York, this good-running GOAT is available here on eBay, where $28,800 has yet to crack the seller’s reserve.

In only its third year, the GTO missed surpassing the 100k production mark by 3,000 units. Not bad for a car that was estimated to be a 5,000-copy-a-year vehicle when first conceived. However, competition would quickly become brisk, and the GTO never cracked the 1966 output figures. In 1967, 81,722 of the Pontiac muscle machines were assembled, nearly half with 4-speed manual transmissions, and 12% (9,517) were drop-tops like this one. The 1960s were a great time to be young and have enough coin to buy a GTO or similar performance auto (and have sufficient funds leftover for gas and insurance).

We’re told the seller has owned this Poncho for a couple of years, taking it out for joy rides on weekends. The odometer reads just shy of 20,000 miles, but its rough edges suggest perhaps there should be a “1” in front of the counter. While the tranny and rear end are original, a later 400 propels the car. The factory motor is still around, and the buyer will need to rebuild it if you want numbers matching. The seller tells us this ragtop is rare due to its list of options, like factory A/C (which is incomplete).

Adding to the scarcity claim are inner red fender liners, which were seldom ordered (why?). PHS paperwork goes with the GTO to back up its heritage. We’re told it’s a great running vehicle thanks to being current on upkeep. The paint is 90% original but quite tired after nearly 60 years. The floors were repaired some time ago, so rust is not an issue. The interior has been refreshed and presents well enough, as does the top. For whatever reason, all four points of the car are sitting higher off the ground with no explanation. Address the paint, and you should have a sweet GOAT to tool around in on Saturday nights (do they still do that?).

I have seen several GTOs restored with the same colors, absolutely stunning combination. If I wasn’t already over my budget in a 1969 Camaro convertible I would be all in.
Ok at over $35,000 with 5 days to go reserve is not met!!! And if you want to repaint and rebuild the car and the original 400 motor on this GTO looking at $100,000.00! Sorry this is nuts. Or do you leave it alone get it detail and enjoy it. I won’t be surprised if it hits $50,000.00 sold! It’s a shame our car hobby got out of reach for the normal man. Well good luck to the next owner. 🐻🇺🇸
New trucks didn’t use to cost 80K either.
Eighty? Eighty-six for a ’23 ‘used’ w/ 6300 miles bought on 05/24, an F350 Lariat Ultimate, Tremor loaded. The thing is, you can make money back with a truck in a business to pay it off. Car show trophys will never add up!
Well, GTOs most likely will always be collectible, however, in adding restoration cost and history of this car, I need to add a little extra for the odd standing height at all four corners. These strange heights are often seen on vehicles with a recent spring replacement. Springs were not mentioned so I should be prepared for an unknown. I always favor any car with Factory Air Conditioning. Here is a mussel car, V8, 4 speed, convertible, with Factory Air Conditioning. Just a perfect find. However, for reasons unknown, the Air is not working and maybe incomplete. I would address the valuable Air Conditioning during or before the incorrect engine installation. A wonderful mussel car ready for a full restoration with eyes wide open on the 2 additional issues that caught my wallet.
It’s a GTO with a manual trans. convertible, A/C, and they have the original engine which is all a nice combo. I would even leave the engine it has in it now and rebuild the original before finishing the body repaint.
There are a few elements missing for this to have factory air. Such as the compressor the aluminum accumulator canister, etc. Just having the vents doesn’t count.
needs the 4wd spring removed. way too high. this will be an expensive 1 to buy
Hi, I had Pontiac’s/GM’s. I had 68′ 400 FB in 75′. I had fc AC in it! I still have the A/C stuff that was under hood! In 68′ came (astro ventilation). I loved it!…if you had fac.ac! You could adjust all vents, I got it so, heat came out of all vents! Especially the center vent! Great for parking!
Nice stance. Seems a little high but what do I know.
I remember when they first came out, standing on the corner in front of Doggy Diner when the ’64 came down 23rd, turned right onto McDonald and my first thought (after thinking some ‘wow’ word or other) was, ‘why is it so tall.?
Seller is crazy not to lower his reserve and see nothing but tail lights. The price it is bid to right now is fair. Including the original motor. There is $80k worth of work still hiding in the closet.
I shouldn’t even have written about this one! Somebody smack me!
This car was absolutely beautiful when it was new. It could be again, but it will take big bank to get there.
I doubt the original paint claim. I believe all ’67 GTOs came with painted pin stripes on both sides, and this car has none.
As others have pointed out, it’s missing some expensive parts in the a.c. system. It’s also missing the Rally II wheels, wood-grain factory steering wheel, and the custom shifter knob. I think 3 of the wheelwells still have the red liners, but the driver’s front appears to be gone. No spare or jack is shown in the photos, either. The hood has been ruined by the big dent and the extra holes.
I’d really like to see photos showing the floor repairs. God only knows what’s been done to the suspension to make it sit up on its tippy-toes like that. Also, I’d like to research the actual VIN. What he’s listed as the VIN is BS.
Bottom line: it’s a weak ad for what is probably a nice project car that’s over-priced.
Fifty-six bids already with 4 days to go? That has the strong pungent odor of shill.
I got the blonde! With this car, all I’ll need is an Air Force Major’s uniform & hat & I can drive around pretending to be Anthony Nelson from I Dream of Jeannie, same model, year, color AND it had AC too!!
If the top goes down, the price goes up! Evidently, the seller missed this point of sale as there’s not a single photo with it featuring its convertible appeal.
Have we seen this one before ?
I wonder if a recent PO was going to give this Goat the donk treatment (a travesty in general, but sacrilege for this particular car) and that’s why it has lifted springs.
Dang, $36,400 @ 0300 MDST. Dreaming of a beat–up convertible, every car made Christmas.
I would have never thunk it. This car blows my mind.
I hope whoever bought this, his reserve was $43k, just leaves it in its Survivor state. There are PLENTY of perfect shiny GTO’s out there, the Survivor’s are dwindling, this will be a HUGE hit at any cruise night, people will flock to it!
