Randy C tipped us off to this nice old Pontiac. The Torpedo shared its body with the Cadillac series 62. Introduced in 1940, this body was streamlined and lowered 2 inches. Running boards were eliminated and the seat widened 5 inches. The Torpedo also had larger windows than other Pontiac models and the shifter was moved up to the column to make room for comfortable 3 across seating in the front. This Torpedo has been converted to 12V and has had ignition, brake, exhaust and suspension parts replace. It runs and drives and is used for daily transportation as is.
The dash is original except for the added gauges under the glove box. Those might be nice to have, but it sure would look good without them.
The seats have seat covers and likely need reupholstery. The headliner and door cards look nice, though.
The engine compartment looks well sorted. The alternator was added when he converted it to 12 volt. The cap, wires and plugs were recently replaced.
This Torpedo is listed on eBay in Fletcher, North Carolina with a BIN of $5,990. This is the low retail price. The auction ends tomorrow and there are no bids yet. There have been a few nonstandard items added, but it is otherwise very original, nice old car, that’s well sorted and ready to drive. Even the pin striping looks original. A polish and wax might make it look really nice and the seats likely need reupholstery. I look forward to seeing what you think of this Torpedo.
Nice way for someone to get cheap into a prewar vehicle, and it can be enjoyed right away.
In the fifties old floor shift 30s Fords (and other cars) were often converted to column shift by customizers, go figure.
Cool ride!
No bids yet ? I would think that someone would be bidding, even
lower than the BIN price if allowed. I love the fastback lines of
the General Motors cars of the 40’s. Maybe because it’s a 4 door
interest is low, not like the Buick and Chevy bus. coupes ?
Well what a great old car the sloped back looks great, the fact that it’s a 4 door on a car this age IMO doesn’t matter. It amazes me that this car has survived for 75 years unskaithed and in original condition. The only thing that would make me like this old beast more would be suicide rear doors and a flat head straight 8 engine. The paint on the body actually looks like it could be polished out, if I had the means to buy and store this old Pontiac I’d be on my way to get it, great find David.
You guys are just killing me today. I’m drooling on my shirt. This is awesome. Keep em coming!
That is one gorgeous car, and a great price!
Sold for $3,450.00 Someone got a good deal!!
Auction ended, “Reserve Not Met” @ $3450
Just noticed a cool detail in the photo of the engine: The pipe and valve on the top of the head must be for opening and closing flow to the heater core. Nice when things were simple.
Some friends just put a heater core in a 12 year old Jeep. The entire dashboard had to be removed. An incredibly time-intensive job.
A step down resistor would get the 6V gauges working again
These old Ponchos were nice cars, none too fast, but they got you there. A nice driver to enjoy everywhere…
My Dad had a black one, same model, and we used it on a trip to Pikes Peak …Big car, even back then.
I learned to drive in one of these ’41 Pontiacs, but a coupe, and it had the BIG motor—the straight-8. Also had 3 on the tree, and a decent amount of torque. Big and heavy for a coupe, and you couldn’t kill it. Built like a battleship, and it was battleship gray, too.
