Original Survivor: 1973 Chevrolet Camaro RS Z28

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Check out this survivor 1973 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 that Patrick Stalionis sent us to review. It is located in Austin, Texas and numerous up-close pictures can be seen here on eBay.  The car is bid to over $24,000 and the reserve has not met. There are 5 days left in the auction. Unfortunately, the seller has failed to include any full pictures of the exterior of the Z28.

The Z28 is said to be all original and a factory 4 speed. The seller states the car is rust free and still has the original paint and original carpet. The odometer shows 45,000 miles. Due to increased emissions standards, the 350 cubic inch V8 engine that came in the Z28 only delivered 245 horsepower. When the Z28 and Type LT options were ordered on a car, the Z28 emblems and stripes were deleted. The stripes on the hood of this beauty were added by the dealer.

The Rally Sport (RS) option meant that this Z28 was equipped with one of the most beautiful front ends ever designed. It was the last year for the gaping front grill. The Type LT model that was first offered in 1973 came with a nicer interior and a quieter ride. All Type LTs came with sport mirrors, rally wheels, full instrumentation, variable power steering, and several other upgrades.

Chevrolet sold 96,751 Camaros in 1973. Even though there are not many exterior pictures of this car on eBay, all the close-up shots make the car looks like it is in great condition. The code 64 silver paint looks great with the black interior and accents. It is a rare day when you see a car like this come to the market. I expect this car to climb into the $30s before the auction is over. Who has owned a 1973 Camaro Z28?

Major pet peeve of mine too. Can’t snap one pic of the entire vehicle?

Isn’t deterring the bidding one bit though. This one’s gonna get real expensive.

I honestly thought the split bumper front end was only on the 1970 1/2. Learn something new everyday

It was part of the Rally Sport package from 70 1/2 thru 73.

      1970 1/2 – 1973 Rally Sport. Could be RS/SS or RS / Z28.

Love this car. Decent color. 4 speed. My best friend had a 70 1/2 RS in 1983? Total piece of crap by that time. Looked great at night, in the rain speeding by!!

I would definitely want to at least see pictures of the whole car for this kind of money!!

No doubt !! Maybe this beauty was recently side-swiped or T-boned !! Doubt it but who sells a car with photos and there is NO side shot. At the very least give me one from the RF corner and the LR corner so I can see both sides as well as the front and rear end. UGH !!!

HP in 73 had to be low, not like that can’t be improved but stock built had to be LOW. 4 speed helps. 70 1/2 & 71 were probably MUCH higher.

IF this car goes over 30K they will probably NEVER get their money back out of it. Careful…..market is declining at an increasing rate and I don’t think it is going to come back up in my lifetime and I am 54.

All you are seeing is collections of cars going to up for sale/to auction. We will be seeing a lot more of this in the next 10 years. Collectors are dying off, market is receiving a lot of nice cars and will continue to do so WITH LIMITED buyers (limited interest) basic economics folks. More supply than demand drives the prices down….THIS CAR is not perfect enough to command top dollar and I BET with MORE PHOTOS you will find more to not like about it.

People have been prediction the demise of muscle car market for 30+ years, it still hasn’t happened. Marginal cars, in terms of popularity and quality will and should take a hit. However, popular makes and models, especially those with the highest performance drivetrains and quality cars will always be sought after.

Now is not the time to be spending money on rusty 6 cylinder or 4 door projects.

        Re: Market conditions.

Yep! All you have to do is look at the results from the current Mecum auction in Indy to see where it is going. I have watched for a few hours over some of the days, and was floored by how many cars are out at “No Reserve”, and further by the prices they actually traded hands at. Many seemed to be selling for less than it would take to do an engine job, others for not much more than that.

Yes, blue-chip cars don’t seem to have taken the hit (yet?) but for the average muscle or collector-oriented (vintage) car, it looks like a market correction is in progress.

The seller seems to be more interested in taking artistic pictures than selling the car. If they want to sell this car, which likely has a $50,000+ reserve they need to create a better ad.

It’s a great looking car. Whoever originally purchased the car had good taste and treated the car well.

‘Most beautiful front end‘ – goofy, compared to a Firebird

It’s all a matter of personal opinion @Luke. I wouldn’t kick a Firebird out of my garage, but I’ve never been a fan of the endura nose either. I for one think the split nose Camaro is one of the nicer looking faces of a classic. Most beautiful ever? I don’t know..

I had that exact car as a teenager in 1977. Nice to see one so well taken care of. I’ve been looking to eventually get another one and wish I was in the position right now to grab this but unfortunately the timing isn’t right. I think there will be more and more available in the coming years and hopefully becomes a buyer’s market.

Nice car but I wouldn’t trade my numbers matching 70 SS/RS for it. By 73 they were pretty gutless.

Gutless? My 73 4 speed went 14.46.The L82 was a 350 hp from a 69 vetted with a 9:1 compression.Only difference was the comp.ratio.Gross power was about 325.You need to get the facts straight.

My 73 had steel tubes on the tops of the exhaust manifolds for emissions; this one looks like they were removed and bolts put in . I’ve always liked the split bumper / flat rear glass Camaros ,much more than the later curved glass models

Years ago I owned the 1970 1/2 Z-28 model. Lobey, high compression 350 LT-1, M-22( rock crusher), 3.73 differential, low rear deck spoiler…Simply put, good old-fashioned adrenalin driving.

The bumperettes made those RS’. I had a 70 1/2 and that has been my favorite car owned bar none. Mine wasnt this nice as in 1985 my Camaro had already seen and engine swap and a repaint but boy could she go.
Pet peeve is when none RS Camaros replace the full bumber with the bumperettes, who you kiddin? Your missing the rubber nose peice and the blinkers are all wrong being giant slits on the lower valance..
Nice car this one, id like to have another RS, but the kind of money these and others warrent im not in that market.

Boy it’s not that often that we see a Camaro like this especially a Z28 that has a bone stock 350 in it, I wasn’t expecting that. I do agree extremely limited pics really tells us nothing about the condition of the car, the seller is hurting himself with this ad.
As far as the demise of the “muscle car” the trend is going strong as ever reaching levels never thought possible, trust me it’s nothing is the same as it used to be! I grew up building and modifying engines and my thoughts always went to heads, cam, intake, exhaust, bottom end etc. When I bought my last fun car in stock form it was already making 650 HP and 650 ft pounds of torque and of course I wanted a little more. I started researching and all my old thinking was out the window, I contacted a company that writes SOFTWARE to modify the ECM, so after telling them what I was looking for they emailed me the new program which I uploaded to my car and now I am making 720 HP and my 199 mph limiter is gone the car is supposed to go 205 MPH all with a software update! Who would have ever thought this possible?

Yeah amen to that my 1st and only camaro until my present one was a 71 Z28 ,carb jets, ign. mods, timing lights, and header’s those were the tuning tools of the day now it’s just a few strokes on the keypad of your laptop and 5/600 HP is possible only thing the same today is exhaust and supercharging, and we all thought that was the golden years

Nice car. My favorite gen of the Camaros. I owned a 70 1/2 and to this day 40 years removed it was my favorite ride.
As mentioned the front end is iconic, with the bumperettes, the rubber nose and those round blinkers.
Pet peeve is when people swap the straight bumber in non RS cars for the bumperettes. Looks so wrong minus the nose piece and those square blinkers in the valance. Sheesh, who you kidding.

Karl you’re absolutely right, even the standard issue camaro, mustang, and Dodge muscle cars cost more than my 1st house, nevermind the ZL1, GT500, and Red-eye, Hellcat

Summer of ’83 my dad borrowed a ’73 Z/28 just like this one, same color,4 speed , and the 350 which appeared stock except for headers. Once started and running the idle sounded anything but stock. Tu-tick-ity tu-tick-ity…you know that sound, right? Non stock long duration cam throbbing out thru turbo mufflers true dual exhaust not the big single cross flow type. Without sufficient vacuum it wreaked havoc on the power brakes, dad found out too without warning, three pumps on the brake pedal and it went all the down to the floor! Heeeellp!
Ran out of gas one afternoon on the freeway as the fuel gauge was broke, once refueled he ran it thru the gears, it was kinda quick but I was more worried about running out of gas again. Or panic stops.
I worked for that guy along with my dad that summer and he actually offered to sell it to me for 2500 bucks. Without the cool black z/28 wheels or the battery for some reason. I just laughed at him,, ” That’s okay” I said real cool like,, “Keep your Chevy, I’m lookin for a fast car.” The feud was on. Great memories seeing this…..nice Camaro.

Back the early 80s my friends brother had a 1973 type LT Z/28 RS,bone stock hurst 4spd,that car was so smooth going thru the gears that i feel in love with that car,it was a cranbury color it had a quadrajet on it and when those seconderies would kick in,it sure never felt like 245hp ,i loved it so much,37 years later i own one, also have a 1970 1/2 z/28 sitting along side it.
