Oval Window Rag Top: 1956 VW Beetle

This 1956 Volkswagen Beetle is a desirable oval window example, which denotes its status as an early model with many of the details enthusiasts tend to swoon over. This one even comes with the period-cool sliding canvas sunroof and a fair amount of floor rust. It’s far from terminal, however, and you’ll find it here on eBay with a $4,500 Buy-It-Now.

The Beetle is certainly every part of a project, and the engine lid is missing in addition to an actual motor. The seller notes that while it does have rust, it’s not as bad as you might expect – especially given the gaping hole in the roof. While currently living in South Carolina, the seller says this Bug was formerly a long-time West Coast car.

The driver’s floor is fairly rotten, and the seller also notes some rust in the front of the drivers channel near the firewall. Front and rear seats are included with the sale, along with some taillights (potentially) to replace the missing assemblies on the fenders. Speaking of, the rear fenders have been replaced, but the fronts are original.

I love the “Webasto” roof, and combined with the desirable oval rear window, this Bug would look killer with some OEM-correct hubcaps and whitewalls, lowered ever so slightly with the requisite roof rack on top. The seller notes it rolls and steers for each transport, and a clean title goes this cool early Beetle.

Not too long ago you could buy a new Beetle in Mexico for $1,000,000 pesos. About $8,000US. I asked salesman if you could bring it into the U.S. he said si senor, no problem! Like most salesmen, he lied. Customs would seize it at the border.

Ragtop, what on earth makes you title this as a ragtop. How about hardtop with soft sunroof.

As it is called by the nickname Beetle, the sliding roof soft version was always called a Ragtop.
Like a Pontiac GTO is called a Goat….

Agree the ragtop is questionable, more accurate would be rag floor, rag quarter panel, etc. Etc.
