Owned 20 Years: 1989 Ford Mustang GT

There comes a day when a car you never thought you’d sell goes up for grabs. In the intervening years, you may tweak a car in ways that are fairly personal because it was supposed to be in your garage until you couldn’t drive anymore. The seller of this super clean 1989 Ford Mustang GT has owned it for almost 20 years and made some enhancements along the way that have undoubtedly made it was more entertaining driver, but those modifications are all reversible with most original parts still included. Personally? I wouldn’t change a thing. Find the Mustang here on eBay with an asking price of $20,000 or best offer.

Now, that’s a not exactly a deal, but it’s also not likely all that far off from what a Fox body in this sort of condition is worth. The cosmetics are excellent, and it shows under 60,000 miles on the clock. The other thing that immediately catches my eye is how near-perfect the shut lines are along the body, with no signs of sagging doors or a misaligned rear hatch. The paint looks lustrous and consistent all the way through, and the later 5-spoke alloy “Pony” wheels work surprisingly well with the older chassis. The Mustang has been tastefully lowered with Steeda lowering springs and caster camber plates. The original turbine-style wheels are included on ancient tires.

The interior is in similar condition to the outside, which is to say, excellent. The original sport seats are in phenomenal shape with no signs of broken bolsters or work upholstery. The seller has made some upgrades inside the cabin as well, noting that he installed a Triax short shifter with  a Hurst handle. The 5-speed transmission has been further upgraded with a Steeda clutch quadrant with clutch adjuster; there’s also a billet flywheel with a heavy-duty clutch. The modifications are all very sensible and seemingly well thought out – this is not a seller who went for the obvious cold air intake and exhaust and called it a day.

Under the hood, there’s a Cobra intake manifold that he purchased from the Ford dealer 20 years ago, a part that cost $800 even in the middle 90s. Other upgrades include BBK shorty headers, highflow cats and Magnaflow mufflers. There’s a Comp cam along with Scorpion rollers and hardened pushrods. The seller further notes he has a detailed log of all modifications, and that every removed component, down to the smallest item, is included in the same so if the next owner wishes to return the car to stock condition, they can. In my opinion, this is the kind of seller you want to buy a modified car from. If I were in the market, I’d have a hard time not hitting the “Buy It Now” option.

This is an attractive Fox Body. It has been extensively modified (read the ebay verbiage), almost everything performance-driven. But it retains a clean, almost stock look– as opposed to the chopped-up results we often see. Long-term owner is a plus. I agree with Jeff, this is the type of seller with whom one would have confidence dealing with.

      Agree100%.

Seller was incredibly detailed with his upgrades – certainly not minor. That and impressive long term ownership says a lot.
I have owned 4 Fox bodies bought new and really appreciated them but this dedication is on another, much higher level. Impressed.
This is whom I would by from.

Could never understand why you would pay more for this than a sleeker LX body.

A true sleeper. The car Isn’t exactly my favorite car. But you have to appreciate a sleeper done right. And man was this car done right. One that a I can’t say is over priced.

I was scrolling through the pictures in eBay and thinking pretty nice, and then I saw the shot of the underside and I was like wow, you could eat off that chassis. Not a big fan of the GT ground effects but a very nice just the same

My dream garage would include a GT hatchback and an LX convertible. Convertible for cruising and hatchback for, um, partying (well, maye 35 year ago!)
