Owned 22 Years: 1990 Ford Mustang LX 25th Anniversary

This 1990 Ford Mustang LX notchback coupe is just sort of cruising along on eBay at the moment, and while it has attracted respectable bids, I can’t help but wonder if this one will sell for less than it should. You see, it’s not just a notchback; it’s also a notchback with the 5.0L V8 and a 5-speed manual. The three pedal setup changes everything on a car like this, as it’s fairly difficult to find a notch coupe with a V8 and the trifecta of having three pedals. Don’t get too excited about the 25th anniversary nomenclature; it’s just an emblem on the dash. Find this Mustang here on eBay where it’s bid to $13,100 with no reserve.

The Mustang looks sharp on the 5-spoke wheels, and it wears a rare shade of paint known as “Wild Strawberry” which the seller tells us was redone a few years ago to correct paint fading. Now, the best part about this listing is the seller’s commitment to keeping this Mustang as stock as possible. You rarely see this sentiment among Fox body owners, many of who will always make an exception for an aftermarket exhaust and intake system. Better than that? The seller is the third owner who purchased the Mustang with just over 30K miles and has owned it for 22 years.

It’s not easy to find low-ownership Fox bodies that aren’t some exotic cocktail of being a Saleen or a Cobra or even just a really nice GT. An LX with only three owners? That’s unheard of. The worst I can see in the cockpit are some typically saggy map door pockets; otherwise, the uninspiring stock seats are still in good order and the dash isn’t cracked. And there’s that wonderful 5-speed manual. The other compelling detail – that comes to mind with the door jams exposed – is that the seller mentions all of the VIN stickers are still present, which means it has its original body panels, too.

As an added cherry on top, the seller reports that he’s dropped $7,000 on maintenance in the past year. This includes a new ignition switch, brakes pads and rotors, a distributor, plugs, ignition coil, harmonic balancer, belts, rear crankshaft main seal, a clutch kit, and more. Overall, there’s not much here to complain about, and that includes the factory 5.0 that’s rated at 225 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. All told, this looks like a good one, and I’d be shocked if bidding didn’t accelerate to over $15,000 before the auction runs out. What do you think it will sell for?

Lavery wouldn’t the factory rims for this year be the fifteen inch 10 hole, aka “phone dial”

Hard to say. But I have seen cleaner examples of late nineties SVT Cobras going for ten grand on this site. Still kicking myself over that one. This Mustang may be at it’s limit. I have those saggy map pockets too and there’s a whole thing on the Internet on how to fix them.

There are several desirable Fox Mustangs, but for many this would be THE sweet spot. LX, notchback, 5.0, 5-speed, apparently not abused, few to no mods, recent maintenance. Long-term ownership. The Wild Strawberry paint isn’t for everyone, but it is certainly unique and eye-catching. I suspect by the time bidding is done it will bring solid money.

I had an ‘88 LX 5.0L I bought new, in the same color but it was a hatchback and automatic. These are nice cars but it’s not $15K unless the top drops.

Usually the drop tops are lower priced than the notchbacks or hatchbacks.

I had a 25th year 90 LX 5.0 that I bought new. Mine came with a better set of seats than that. It makes me wonder if those are the originals or replacements.

Original seats. In ’90, the hatch and vert LX 5.0s came with the GT’s “articulated” front bucket seats but the 5.0 notch got the same seats as the 4-cylinder LXs. In ’91 the GT seats became standard on all LX 5.0s.

I had a ’90 LX 5.0 hatchback. Nice car, plenty fast for the time. But no tilt wheel because of the new air bag.

Fomoco never produced an anniversary edition, instead they used a dash plate that said 25 years from April 17, 1989 to April 1990.

Flipped for 16k+, say what you want but that’s a whole lot of smiles for that price. Fun, pretty quick for what they are, and wicked reliable. Swap out the seats for the GT ones and she an sweet ride.

When it’s all said and done for me the fox body to have is a notchback. I think they will a good investment.
