Owned 41 Years! 1970 AMC AMX

Like a breath of fresh air, this AMX comes to market offered by its owner of 40+ years, exalted in a listing here on eBay that includes many key details that fall by the wayside when classics land on the trailers of “flippers.” Lazy sellers want as much money as possible for the minimum effort before moving on to the next victim. Relaying any known history of the car only leads to more questions and additional time and scrutiny. It’s so much easier just to say “I don’t know anything about the car,” and then the car’s story becomes lost. The good news about this 1970 AMC (American Motors Corp) AMX (American Motors eXperimental) in Reseda, California just keeps coming. Original 390 engine? Yes, plus a built 401. Four speed with Go-Package? You bet. Is everything there? Probably, plus duplicates of some parts. Loss of the rented home forces the sale. A deconstructed car always brings a lower price even when the sum of its parts may likely become one amazing ride. The auction awaits a starting bid of $12,500, the price of a 180,000 mile Accord. This AMX ‘s not absolutely perfect, but from the description, the engine should be worth $5000 alone.

The engine rebuild dates back only “a few years” when “minor” earthquake damage triggered renewed interest in the restoration. A 401 cid 1972 Police mill’s first-class rebuild included extensive engine and head work described in the listing. The original 390 comes with the car and has never been rebuilt.

Originally Golden Lime, the car saw a color change to medium teal metallic in the 1980s, which seems to have held its shine. Parts coming with the glossy AMX include multiple sets of tail lights, three aluminum intakes, four sets of valve covers, and more. A Ford 9″ rear end with 3.50 gears represents the most obvious deviation from stock. While not original, that unit should readily handle the 401’s better-than-factory power.

A dashboard this fine rarely graces the digital halls of Barnfinds, so take a moment to appreciate it! I believe the stock steering wheel rests under the $20 K-Mart special. A set of immaculate and apparently-reupholstered seats rest elsewhere and come with the sale. Anyone who spent youthful Christmas mornings assembling toy cars or plastic models without consulting the instructions is surely qualified to assemble this AMX. Battery not included? Despite a loyal following, AMC’s interesting muscle cars, of which the AMX tops the heap, rarely bring the kind of respect that translates into suitcases of cash. That’s good news for AMX fans, though. Can you see yourself piloting this high-powered two-seater?

I hate seeing something like this when I’m not in the position to purchase or I would be hooking up the trailer and making a shotgun run to Cali! I would of course put it back to the original color, keep the original engine but finish off the 401. Too bad that not gonna happen.

I live in montreal and it would be an impossible drive both for distance and a closed border but WOW this is a great project and a rare beauty
Hope someone with energy and passion takes over this project and enjoys it

That wikipedia explanation of the “GO PACK” is false, incomplete and misleading. Why this guy painted it blue and did nothing with it for 30 yrs does not add up.

I know several people that have nearly finished projects sitting in their garages, untouched for just as long, it’s more common than you may think.

If i disassemble and bag and tag everything, the vehicle goes back together. If someone else has disassembled and sat on for years. Who knows what part goes where or if all the parts are there. Many projects taken apart and many never get put back together. Tough to tell if all parts are there? and what part goes where? GOOD LUCK??? Even when ive been in the AMC hobbie for 30 years.

As the seller states “Don’t Assume This is Relic Basket Case” but it is. It will clearly need a ground up resto but it does look like it’s all there, then some, but a lot of jigsaw in that puzzle. Probably shouldn’t ask if the AC needs a recharge.

Well someone got a screamin deal. Car originally came with nice options. The turquoise is attractive, but id prefer the original color. The shadow mask looks great on these cars and is more rare than you think. Would like to see the paperwork proving the dealer installed the donahue spoiler. Would look better without it but kinda neat if there’s proof. Looks mostly all there and the fact you get extra parts is nice, the 401’s can make some great power, and on pump gas…. This wouldnt be to tough to have put back together but needs the paint work done first obviously. Good luck to new owner and Harley, if you miss your javelin maybe you should buy your buddy’s amx… Just a thought

I’ve been working with cars since I was 12 years old I painted my mothers 55 Pontiac with house paint and a brush when I was 5 but that didn’t turn out so good for me what did was flipping cars and rare parts . Whoever wrote this article about this AMC AMX seems to have a problem with that but I’ve gotten to love and play and say hello to many banks . The people I have met over the years are still friends and some of them have sold me more of there classics . This AMX is very nice but loving a AMC is different from anything else you have owned!! Problem lies in the parts and not very many want to work on them as simple as they are . You also better have a extra $25-35,000 to make it perfect as possible because they only made just over 600 like this one . Hopefully a AMX freak like me gets it as for the guy who wrote the add you better stay away from the front of my car before I flip it on ya !!
