Owned for 27 Years: 1969 Porsche 912

How refreshing: someone who has actually owned an aircooled 911/912 and not just found it and threw it on eBay. Granted, this 27-year owner may be attempting to cash in on the fanatical pricing for long-hood Porsches, but at least the rewards will go to someone who kept this survivor-grade 912 carefully stored for close to three decades. If only every project car owner took such care in protecting the projects they won’t get to. Bidders seem to agree, as they’ve pushed bidding over $12K with a day left. Find it here on eBay and located in Connecticut.

The body looks quite sound from all corners, with the paint sporting a consistent, dull finish. The earlier cars wore these tidy slim bumpers, and they appear largely dent-free on this car. Unlike later 911s with the center garnish staring you dead in the face, the empty middle part of the rear end simply housed a license plate. Lenses look good as well, and the period aftermarket exhaust indicates some level of fun was had when this car was younger.

The seller says this 912 has been in storage for 27 years and he was able to wake the car up with ease before putting it up for sale. The interior presents fairly well, with a similar tatty look to the exterior but by no means destroyed. The carpets are at least untorn if not in need of a cleaning, and it’s good to see the original steering wheel in place along with door panels that haven’t been cut for speakers – all the rage in the 70s and 80s when this was just a used car.

As you can see, beneath that coat of primer and/or battleship gray spray paint, this 912 wore a desirable shade of yellow – it looks to me like Bahama Yellow, one of the best aircooled colors there is! What a shame someone covered it up, but hopefully the top coat can be stripped away or the next owner simply undertake repainting. The seller has included a video in the listing that shows the 912 firing up with a bit of fuel in the carb, which makes this honest project even more appealing if you’re hunting for a long-hood car.

Not bad and am sure will rise in bids higher and higher . Never like a primed car as one worries what’s underneath but from pitchers looks okay but a magnet test on quarters and rockers would be good.

Wet sand the primer off wax whatever is left of the original paint then drive the wheels off of it.

Appears to be all there; looks like some serious rust issues on the underbelly and the strut rod anchors. That zero feedback is worrysome, but the serious buyer would neeed to take a good look anyway.

    Good luck

Somebody jump on this. These cars have strong upsides, are a joy to drive and as a 912 no issues with induction and other strange things as in 911s. You’ll love it. I have one. I’m never selling it.

gaspumpchas is right—-there’s what looks like some serious rust on the underbelly, including what appears to be perforation in the pan in the vicinity of the front torsion bar mounts. That has to be fixed or the front suspension could collapse.

Another serious potential problem is the rear suspension torsion bar mounts, which are very exposed and often end up very rusty in these old P-cars. Unfortunately there are no photos of them.

And as chas has mentioned, the seller has no feedback, so best to go there and view the car yourself, both to view it and also to make sure the car shown in the photos is actually there.

The reason for saying this is that there have been cases reported recently in which photos of cars for sale have been taken from online ads and inserted in other ads where the image thief didn’t have a car to sell.

Best to go there and see the car for yourself. I wouldn’t consider buying a car like this without seeing it myself, or having a trusted friend or a paid professional go and look at it for me, with a printed report, with photos, sent to me.

Gone at 15K, seems rather low since people are crazy for Porche. Seems pretty solid when compared to the rust bucket 356’s we have seen of late.
