Pampered Berlinetta: 1984 Chevy Camaro

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1984 Chevy Camaro Berlinetta is a clean survivor-grade example of Chevy’ interesting highline trim that ran counter to the brawny Z28. Featuring unique upholstery and a more upscale feel, the Berlinetta occupied an odd spot in the Camaro lineup, sort of akin to answering a question no one had asked. This example here on eBay has just 65,408 original miles and is listed for $6,500 or best offer.

If you have to own a Berlinetta, this would be the one to get as it’s a V8 car. The eight-cylinder mill was optional, and I’m guessing many of these luxo-liner Camaros were outfitted with the lower-output six-banger. The interior featured unique upholstery, and that’s certainly a good look for it. I dig the door panel pattern but this quilted-cloth on the seats is certainly an acquired taste.

The Berlinetta did step up the feature content in other ways, like with this trick digital dash. Overall, the console was freshened up with lots of buttons and brushed finishes, perhaps to compete with the likes of what companies like Nissan/Datsun or Mitsubishi were installing in their interiors. This digital cluster read-out would find its way into other cars like the Corvette, even if it didn’t help the Berlinetta set any sales records.

The seller is fairly light on the details presented here, aside from emphasizing the car’s impressive cosmetic condition. I suppose there’s not too much here that can go wrong and parts sourcing won’t be a problem. My question with a car like this is whether it will ever be worth what you paid for it – especially if you bite at the current asking price. These aren’t necessarily inspiring cars to drive, and the Z28 with the stick is the driver’s favorite – so what do you do with this one, other than rack up the miles without a care in the world?

Those may be the ugliest seat covers I’ve ever seen.

That quilted upholstery ins’t the seat, that’s a seat cover over the original seats.

I have always liked the digital dash in these cars.

The turn signal lever is interesting to use when you are used to the stalk type.

Remember the radio that was on a swiveling stalk? That and the click-ey turn signal switch seemed like the coolest thing….for about 15 minutes, until you realized that it was still a mid-80s GM plastic interior. This is still a cool car though.

Ok before we go bashing this thing try to think of it as the fox body LX vs the GT. I spent a lot of time in one of these in ‘87, blue w grey interior, t-tops and the 5 speed. It was kind of a sleeper because it didn’t have any ground effects or spoilers but that thing was fun to drive and had no problem lighting up the tires. I’ve casually been looking for one for a couple years now and they just don’t exist. This is the second one I’ve seen with the V8 and the ask is a bit tall for me with that color combo.

On the bright side, it looks like it has a full tank of gas.

Yes, but, on the down side it has -0- oil pressure. LOL

I think these are way better looking than any Fox body. Get rid of the ugly seat covers and go back to original type interior. No 80’s car is going to be a speed demon, so just buy and enjoy the cruise.

They didn’t even show the Berlinetta specific radio pod.

What is on the dash? Is it a giant additional rear-view mirror?

I was dating a girl back in 83 and she bought one of these exact cars. The slimeball salesman ended up cheating around with her and ripping her off ta’boot. She ended up getting it re’poed lol, karma

Berlinetta was a nice, loaded Camaro in 79-81…lots of pinstriping, almost to T/A Firebird excess. PW, A/C, PS, PDB, and cushy suspension. minimal badging, and no techno advancements to fail for owner. Only stopped to look further on this for rear hatch…and see no images of it. In dealer window….this is an aftermarket “Hot Hatch”….that eliminated the large fastback glass and frame, and replaced with flat lid and sail panels to smaller flat glass. ALMOST corvette like tunnel.

I always liked the “luxury” Camaros like the LT and Berlinetta and I almost bought one in 86 but I wonder why they had to put seat covers over the original seats with only 65k miles?

A lot of people put those on to save the original seats.

I would like to see what is underneath.

So….that’s what a “Bordello Red” interior looks like.

I had a Bronze colored 84 with a V-6 and a manual transmission. That car would run pretty good and hold the road. This is a clean car to be sure. The value might not be off the mark to much if you planned to make it a trailer queen. Yeah I know why would you. But 20 years from now it might actually appreciate to 10K or more. If we still have gas to run them.

Dad bought one when I was 15 and I thought that it was pretty awesome at the time. That crazy post radio and the speakers stashed in the pillar. I would sneak it out and beat it a tad from time to time, I remember how the front would raise like our boat when it took off
