Because I’m a sucker for a good “car discovery” story, I’m taken with the tale behind this 1978 Porsche 911 that popped up on Facebook a few days ago. The owner claims he used to drive this 911 every day before he left it in this exact spot and now hasn’t touched it in 10 years time. Curiously, the whole lot is full of other rotting classics, which looks more like a mechanic’s collection of vehicles belonging to customers who haven’t paid their bills. Regardless, this 911 is listed here on Facebook Marketplace with great colors and rare OEM wheels, along with a ton of surface rust.
The photos definitely leave little doubt that this 911 has, indeed, been parked for a decade. The dirt and mold you see here is hard to fake, and can really only be created by leaving a car to stand for years at a time. Take a look at the background photos and you’ll see what I mean – there’s a ton of vintage tin sitting around, and surely the seller didn’t drive them all to their current resting spots – or did he? The color is also worth talking about, as any factory yellow air-cooled 911 is a bit of a rare beast; this one is either Light Yellow or Canary Yellow, though it’s hard to tell with all that dirt and detritus.
The interior isn’t bad, and it, too looks like a somewhat rare color. Certainly, this is not a combo you see every day. The armrest may be an item as well, as it looks like a genuine Husco unit, a company that made accessory items like these for a number of the German makes back in the day. The seat upholstery is well-worn, lending credence to the claims that this 911 was used as a daily driver. There are some other tweaks, like the steering wheel and gear shift knob, but it more or less resembles a stock car inside. Hopefully, water intrusion hasn’t been an issue.
In 1978, a 911 would have made around 180 horsepower. Far from a rocketship but plenty good for the era. The engine bay looks as filthy as the rest of the car, but we’re encouraged to see matching yellow paint on the engine lid hinges. The seller doesn’t report whether the engine still turns over, and the asking price seems like it could be a fair deal for a complete car. However, the question I have is whether all that surface rust is the extent of the corrosion or if the floors will also need work; if the rot has gotten into the chassis, this project will definitely be more involved but likely still worth it to save a rare color air-cooled 911. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Chuck F. for the find.

Someone put a modern A/C compressor in it, so there’s that…
Probably just needs a recharge.
Looks like either local car auction site or co-part yard, or donation location. Could be scam would have to do your homework on this one, especially with mention of a roller also, just doesn’t feel right.
These things are like gold, regardless of condition. If you stumble on one, buy it quick.
What a way to treat one’s 911!
I just checked the Facebook ad where this is listed. Some young long haired kid, into Skater apps, dirt bikes, …. there is no way this guy has owned this 911 for 10 years, and it does not fit in with anything I can see in his profile. Just my opinion…
….but it’s air cooled!!!’
So my ” Put an LS in it ” comment got deleted?
The price of this poor car in this horrible condition is why I never got into flipping these cars I would at least wash it and deal with the rust on the front before asking that kind of money for it
