1986 Porsche 930 Turbo Garage Find

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

It’s always amazing how some cars that most of us define as exotic or spectacular in some capacity still end up becoming dusty pieces of garage art for certain caretakers. In the case of this desirable turbocharged Porsche 930, the seller claims he stopped driving it in 2005 and it has been parked evers since. He notes it’s time to “…sell some of his toys,” so the 930 is up for grabs here on Facebook Marketplace for a heady $150,000.

That’s top-of-the-market pricing for a car that hasn’t seen much love in recent years and will almost certainly require a significant injection of capital for deferred maintenance. While the 930 is a legend among 1980s supercars, it isn’t quite like the limited-production turbo 911s that followed in terms of raw desirability. The 930 is a legend in its own right, but it can’t rightfully challenge the likes of the 993 or even 964 Turbos at the moment for boosted air-cooled dominance.

That’s not a knock on the car, but rather a commentary on market dynamics. While almost every variant of the air-cooled 911 is desirable in some capacity, the later cars are the ultimate blend of everyday usability and classic air-cooled quirks. The 930 shown here looks far better on the inside than out, with a handsome black interior that appears to be in good shape overall, with the floormats emblazoned with the classic “Turbo” script still in place.

The Turbo sported the classic whale-tail rear spoiler and generously flared fenders, and this was the model that perhaps could carry off the gigantic rear wing the best. As you can see, this 930 has been stationary for quite some time, but at least it’s been in the dry climate of Carson City, Nevada to hopefully keep rust at bay. The photos show that this car sports an aftermarket set of side “strakes” in front of the rear arches, so I’d check for other modifications if you’ve got this 930 under consideration. Would you pay this much for a garage-find 911 Turbo?

Cleaning up the car and taking some decent pictures is certainly needed to support that asking price.

I don’t think anything could support that asking price. That is insane. God knows the work you’d have to put in to get it safely back on the road.

By the mid 80s the turbos still didn’t spool up fast enough to make them safe around the corners. Many a Biff bought the farm in these. Bye Biff, enjoy what ever you got coming after. I seem to recall a verse somewhere talking about a camel through a needle and a rich man maybe not getting into heaven.

It only takes a few ‘near death’ moments to park your dream car, preferring to stay alive. I had the same moments with my Kawa 500 in the mid-70’s & let myself been ‘persuaded’ by my father to let go of my Kawa in exchange for a car!

Should watch wheeler dealers bring a Porsche back to life. Elvis did a lot of engine repair and pre maintenance. Big $$$$ if you have someone to do it.

Be careful on this bad boy as it was pre-motronic injection (CIS) and some parts for these are NLA. Great when they are running right and it will likely take someone experienced with these to get it that way. Otherwise he’s got it priced like a 935.

Don’t those ultra rich sheik types use these for Ferrari tree fertilizer planters in Dubai? Just reflecting on a cartoon I saw years ago.

HAD one. Been there done that. Never again. Best wishes to the new ass in the seat.

oh it will stay in that garage for that price.

More like $50,000 if you’re lucky!

Parked back when it wasn’t worth fixing.

      Roger that.

You could buy 2 or 3 decent American made Detroit muscle for about half of what this guy wants for a turd in a punch bowl.

      OK, I’m done.

Jeff, you have to change the title on this one.

No one “finds” a 930 Turbo in their garage. This one just seems to be part of a neglected collection.

Anyone can crap on any car that they want to – it’s a free country (so far at least). Y=There are faults with anything made by humans and we could pick apart the best or the worst or anything in between.

But why bother beating up on someone else’s car??? If you don’t like it then just move on and keep your crap to yourself unless you have something important to share.

930 Turbos have been around since the mid-’70’s so we’re all aware of their unique handling characteristics.

Porsches in general are great cars and 930’s are no exception.

Maybe you have a problem with the owners price but you can just say the price is too high based on the fact that the car has been in storage for a long time and might need some special care when getting it out of storage and ready for the road so the price should reflect this – – – – – rather than just piling on the car because you don’t happen to appreciate Porsche (or whatever car is getting beat up at the time….

Enjoy the cars on here on Barn Finds that you like and ignore the cars that you don’t, rather than throwing crap out!!!

I won’t mention any names – you know who you are… and we that enjoy cars in general and Barn Finds in particular know who you are too.

Agree. But lets be honest…..some contributors have their own bias as well as owners claims are questioned all the time.
If this were an LS6 Chevelle in similar condition going for big bucks we could expect comments from some writers such as:
      “Mileage claim is “X” but….
“based on the the door cards…”
“based on the wear of the brake pedal…”
“based on the wear of the steering wheel…”
based on the cracks in the seats”….
and it goes on and on. Go back and read the last bunch of Porsche listings and you won’t find such comments questioning owners claims or cautioning readers that things aren’t as they appear.

Maybe a 930 Slant Nose might be more in line with the asking price. Seems like the seller doesn’t really want to part ways with this car, but will if someone will cough up big bucks for a car that needs some work.

Ain’t worth $150k. More like $60k at the absolute outside — IF the guy cleans it up and auctions it off. I can vouch for the unforgiving nature of this car. You really need to know how to drive.

I bought one on ebay some 10 years ago, a 1987 or 88 model. When it arrived to my place in EU, I only then realized it has a 4 speed tranny. A car of late 80’s with a 4 speed?! Corvettes had a 6 speed already! Drove terribly, bad brakes, funny sounding engine, terrible tranny, so I chose to sell it. Made quite some money a year later, but I guess I should’ve just kept it, prices went up unbelievably. But I don’t know what people see in them until today still…

It’s nice to have dreams. I’m sure if he holds on to it long enough, someone will come by the $150k…or a few cartons of canned goods to trade.

There’s something to be said for sentimentality, but no to $150k.
Rework in the engine room is $30k min,
    and just…
    No.
