Parked In ’84: 1969 Pontiac GTO

Here’s a huge project for a huge Pontiac fan! This GTO has been off the road since 1984 and has supposedly covered just 68k miles. Not that it really matters now since this car needs a full restore. It’s going to be a huge undertaking but maybe there’s someone out there who wants to save this poor goat? If you have what it takes, find it here on eBay. Bidding is up to $4k and the auction ends later today.

Oh look, no engine! That’s a bummer because the engine option can really affect the value and desirability of a project like this. If it was originally fitted with the base 400 engine, it might be better used as parts. Then again, if it came from the factory with the 370hp/445lb-ft Ram Air IV engine, a full restoration might make more sense. Either way, this one will be more of a labor of love rather than a financially smart endeavor.

The seller states that the car is PHS documented so I’m guessing they know which engine was optioned. I’m also guessing it was the base 400 since they didn’t mention it. It may not look like much, but this GTO was originally green with a black vinyl top and white interior. It was also fitted with some nice options including bucket seats, front disk brakes, and a dual-stage air cleaner.

The body looks pretty rough but the seller claims that the frame is “beautiful”. If that’s true, some underside photos might be a good idea. With a missing engine and a beat-up body, this GTO might be best used for parts. We hate to see another muscle car leave this world though. What do you think? Could this one be brought back to life?

I see a ton of work, and it could be restored. Not for me, but if it has a posi rear, bonus. Tinted glass, stainless trim, Rally ll’s (if they are correct) AC parts, grilles look decent, maybe even the hood, not to mention a zillion small parts. I would take it in a heartbeat for $500, it has way more that in parts value, and appears to be complete except for the engine. If it was in my local area, I would buy a trailer full in that shape for $500 each! I see it as a great parts car.

I agree on the edit button, Chris. I miss it a lot.

Speaking of missing muscle cars… I doubt if this one would be missed.

Well, it still resembles a GTO. There’s another one parked next to it in worse shape. This will no doubt be a labor of love if someone tries making it road worthy again, for some reason GTO’s don’t seem to bring the real big bucks other muscle cars do unless it’s an original RamAirIV car. Maybe it’s a lack of rarity?
What is a dual stage air cleaner?

I see remnants of an AC system, which means it did not have the RA IV engine.

In my opinion if it’s a real 69 GTO it’s worth the time for a handy mechanic to do in his home shop!! It will take a lot of work but just do a restomod it will go quicker than trying to do it all original!!!

It sold for $4.051 For someone with a good source of parts, this could be a reasonable project. It’s a shame the original engine is gone though, that will hurt the overall value if going back to stock. Good luck to the new owner!
