Dodge was the last major U.S. automaker to get into the pony car space, but that was more than five years after the rush had started. It would do well in its first year, selling nearly 77,000 units, but demand began to fall off after that for cars in that genre. This ’70 Challenger was once stripped of its parts for a restoration that never really got off the ground. Now it appears to be a shell with a large assortment of parts that may or may not add up to a whole car. Located in Lee, New Hampshire, everything you see and then some is available here on Facebook Marketplace as a package deal for $5,000. Thanks, AMXBrian, for sending this tip our way!
There are two ways to look at a car like this: it’s either a major project that will require a lot of time, money, and patience to bring it back to life, or it’s a treasure trove of parts to help give one or more other Challengers have a shot at a new life. What we can see of the car here looks pretty rough and rust is bound to be a consideration in the viability of the car as a project. But it comes with a bunch of extra sheet metal that might help resolve those issues.
This was a base Challenger and – as such – may have come with a 318 cubic inch V8, to begin with. But it’s paired with a 4-speed manual and the seller has a 340/4-speed that comes along for the ride. We don’t know the condition of either drivetrain pair at this point, but a safe assumption is that rebuilds are needed. We’re told the Dodge has all its glass and interior pieces. The list of extra sheet metal may be where the gold mine lies if there is one:
- Quarter panels
- Floors – trunk and passenger compartment
- Variety of patch panels
The seller mentions that he has a barn full of parts but doesn’t mention if they are Challenger-specific and are included in the sale. If the parts supply is truly endless, $5,000 could buy new lives for other old Dodges. As New Hampshire doesn’t do titles for cars this old, the Challenger will only come with a Bill of Sale. And no trades will be considered.
I remember the days when $5000 would buy you a CAR.
Is that trailer included in the deal? Ran when parked?
It went to pieces.
These old Challengers are cool. Being that my friends all had old cars I had a decision to make about buying one. I bought a new retro styled Challenger instead. It has the Hemi scat pack, shaker hood, sun roof, all the electronics, A/C, etc. It can get decent mileage, idles super smooth, and goes super fast with a Mercedes designed suspension. Considering my 77 years age, it was a good decision. I still love the old cars though.
There are a ton of valuable E-body parts there. That rally dash gauge pod alone is worth a grand.
