Party Pack: Trio of 1965 Pontiac GTO Projects

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Pontiac GTO was one of the surprise sellers in the 1960s (another being the Ford Mustang). Instead of the presumed annual demand of 5,000 units, the GTO sold 32,000 copies in 1964 and another 75,000 when the 1965 model year closed its books. The seller has a trio of the ‘65s and they’re all in rough shape (but restorable per the seller). They’re offered as a package deal from Mojave, California, and are available here on eBay for a flat price of $30,000. Eagle eye Mitchell G. brings us this tip!

This forlorn Manny, Moe, and Jack combination has likely been sitting out in the desert sun for quite some time. Most of the photos are focused on the pillared coupe on the trailer, though its body might be the worst of the three (but it may be the most complete). You’ll recall that the only engine offered in the 1965 GTO was a 389 cubic inch V8, with a single 4-barrel carburetor or Tri-Power (triple 2-barrels). They work out to $10,000 a piece with no talk of breaking up the band. Here’s a run-down by vehicle.

1965 GTO (Red)

We’re told this car has its original (but faded) paint. The 389 has been replaced by a partial 355 that is non-running. It’s also a 4-speed Pontiac. Rust hasn’t consumed this one, though there is a little bit in the trunk. There are no seats, but it has a good console, and the auto comes with some extra parts.

1965 GTO (Blue)

This GOAT also has its original finish, blue in color. The 389 may be intact but the 4-speed is MIA. We’re told the front clip is shot and rust can be found in numerous places. At one time this Pontiac went drag racing and won in its class back in the ‘60s. This one has its bucket seats and some of the glass has survived.

1965 GTO (Post)

The sedan version of the 1965 GTO was the rarest at about 11% of production (even fewer built than convertible). It retains its 389 V8 and is the only one here with an automatic transmission. It has not done well at escaping the rust bug and is also banged up in a few places. A replacement floor pan is included along with a new hood.

Optimistic pricing, to say the least. They’re only 50% high……

Agree with @Jangus, I am seeing fifteen, maybe eighteen, tops, for the three. They’ve all got issues with the sheet metal or missing drivetrain. The seller would probably have an easier time trying to sell them individually.

Great write-up. You folks are creative and exceptional at what you do. Gotta agree 30 large is illusive. Looks like someone is giving up on their dream here. I get it. I have 3 projects. 66 Olds 442, 68 Ford 5oo Sportsroof, 69 Coronet 440. Will turn 65 in a few months.

Dunno about you blokes, but I’m off to Google Maps for the aircraft graveyard!

I usually try to avoid saying anything negative about the vehicles offered here, so I don’t mean anything negative about this offering, but I would advise a prospective buyer to pass on this group and buy a nice car that you can drive immediately. Even if you could get the group for half of the asking price I don’t see how it would be worth it. Maybe someone somewhere will see enough value in this trio to make a deal with the seller and take them home, so I say good luck to all involved.

Wow! I never knew that Surface Rust was a 1965 Pontiac factory color?

$30k would make a nice down payment on a nice Goat, and save a lot of work and expense.

Life is far too short to waste it on these three heaps. For 30K and what time and money it will cost to make these drivable, you could gave one good GTO already turn key and money for your old age when you can no longer turn wrenches.

Seriously !! With everything that needs to be done to make it driveable ? Get your head out of the clouds or wherever it’s at. 30 grand is way to much more like 5000 if that most

My bet is that he got all three for less than $10k. That’s for the one car that isn’t horrible. The other 2 the owners probably paid him to take them away. What is more likely is that he bought them and took what he needed from each one to make one decent car and these are the leftovers and is selling them for more than what he paid for them in the first place.
