Patina Build: 1960 VW Single Cab

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

A recent trend is to take a vintage VW Type 2 that’s already sporting some honest wear and tear, then apply some faded graphics indicating it was a parts runner for a dealer or a former track support vehicle. I have no real problem with this, other than getting excited that the vehicle in question comes with such an interesting history. Finding out it’s an artificial treatment is a real bummer. Still, this 1960 single cab pickup here on eBay is cool no matter what the graphics say, and is currently bid to over $16K.

As you can see, the seller is attempting to forge a connection between this old Bus and some sort of support for a Volkswagen / Porsche track team, or perhaps a dealership that sells both marques. I can appreciate the intent, but given it’s not real, it’s just distorting what is otherwise a very honest, straight, and desirable Bus with a pickup body. I do dig the roof rack and ladders, along with the OEM-correct steel wheels and hubcaps.

The seller is adamant the Bus was carefully and modestly updated to preserve its history while fixing only what was broken. This is a big deal if you’re a Type 2 fanatic, as so many of these Buses have gone straight into top-dollar restorations that yield a valuable product, but one that is typically a far cry from the simple, utilitarian vehicle it started out as.

Mechanically, the seller says the 1600 runs strong, and the 12V electronics function as intended. New brakes are another improvement, but any further modifications are not revealed – aside from the custom graphics on the outside. If you can’t get a 21 window Bus, the improvements made here should put it on your short list, provided you’re OK hauling parts instead of friends and camping gear.

While I can’t stand the concept of fake graphics, at least they are being divulged as such. No telling how many of them out there aren’t!

I realize it’s nitpicking, but why would anyone put the Renndienst label on a vehicle in Orange County?

This is like the 3rd or 4th time this same bus has been listed in the last few months on eBay.

Have seen these at race tracks with folks on top drinking beer and watching the races. I do think if I had it for that I’d build a fold up railing to keep the party in one place.

The fuel filter is in the carb. It’s a little screen that doesn’t do much. I have a 61 single cab and have a plastic fuel filter on it also.

I would still use an external metal (aluminum) fuel filter. The plastic ones are pure crap. And obviously mount them outside of the engine compartment.

It seem funny to me that these cars were inexpensive for their day!! Now the prices there bringing are ten times that of new!! I’m not a big fan of the “patina” look!! I’ve heard the arguments but I wonder how many people do this to not spend the money on the paint job!! After all there getting almost as much money as a fully restored vehicle!!!

Your average person wouldn’t know it, but, these single cabs were rated at 3/4 ton. I had a ’59 that I used for delivering newspaper bundles to route delivery people. That truck was a die-hard tank.
