Pickup Edition: 1976 International Scout Terra

While spotting an International Harvester Scout isn’t hard to do, the pickup body variant known as the Scout Terra is a fair bit harder to come by. The example seen here is one such truck, and it remains in decent condition with lots of original features and just some rust around the wheel arches. Find the Scout here on craigslist with an asking price of $7,900.

Thanks to Barn Finds reader Ikey H. for the find. The Terra was a compelling offering from Harvester for the mid-sized pickup market, combining good looks with decent hauling capacity – up to 2,000 pounds. The bed wasn’t particularly generous, though the Terra was a long vehicle. Here you can see the rust blooming on the arches, but it’s nothing you can’t live with for now.

The Terra retained the Scout’s legendary off-road ability, and the seller has added some knobby tires to enhances its capabilities. The Terra came with manual locking hubs standard on 4WD models, so it had the goods right from the factory. This one comes with the smaller of the two V8s offered, the 304. The seller says it runs and shifts well.

I can’t quite tell from the description, but the seller mentions something akin to 11,000 original miles. It may be a misprint because this Terra model certainly appears to have over 100,000 miles based on cosmetics. Overall, however, as a stock example that isn’t overly rusty and features the rare pickup body, there’s a lot to like about this 1976 Scout Terra.

The independent makes were sometimes ahead of the curve, which is no better than being behind the curve. Pickups of this size would become super popular a decade later with international long gone from light vehicle manufacture.

The Scout Terra beat the Dakota to market by almost a decade. Had a V8 larger than the Dodge and was available as a convertible first. However thanks to strikes and management treating the light truck line as an afterthought, it’s not remembered as first. I’d love one with the rag top and the 345 auto or four speed and Advance Adapters headers, a Schneider cam, and a four bbl intake with a proper carb, and an updated digital ignition.

I like it, just not the color and I don’t need another vehicle at this time.

I like it but wonder why no photos of interior or engine bay.
Makes me more than a little concerned.

Now this is a nice size truck. Add in some mods, a paint change and wheel/tires that are NOT too cartoonish, and you got a real looker.
