Pontiac Project: 1979 Pontiac Firebird

So, I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is that this Pontiac Firebird runs and drives, and it has never been crashed or repaired which means that it is pretty original. The bad news is that what is hiding under the hood is probably not what you would hope for. Listed for sale here on eBay, this Firebird is located in Riverton, New Jersey. It comes with a clear title and bidding has reached $405 in the “No Reserve” auction.

As you can see, this Pontiac is not perfect. It does have a couple of rust issues that will need to be addressed. You can see the rust in the tail panel, but that shouldn’t be hard to rectify. I am also a bit worried about what looks like a rust hole in the left of this shot near the brake line. That will require some investigating. There may also be a couple of very minor holes in the floor pan on the passenger side, but this just might be a trick of the light as it is hard to tell for sure. I also like the hole in the silencer and how it is venting straight onto the gas tank. The remainder of the shots of the underside of the car tends to indicate a vehicle that is structurally solid.

This is the other area where there are rust issues. The trunk floor has some holes which will definitely need to be addressed. Taking a close look at the supplied photos leads me to believe that this might not be the first such occurrence in the trunk as there does appear that other repair work may have been carried out.

The interior will certainly also need to come in for its share of attention. A lot of the plastic trim in both the front and the rear of the car is badly discolored, the dash pad is cracked, and it appears that while the driver’s seat will need a new cover, the remaining seats will either need a really deep clean or new covers as well. The door trims may be able to be salvaged as the upholstery seems to be pretty reasonable, and where the vinyl is wrinkled it may be able to be stretched back into place.

Under the hood isn’t a sweet V8, but the base 3.8 liter V6 mated to an automatic transmission. The seller states that the car runs and drives and that he recently had it up to 50mph out on the road, but he also suggests that the new owner probably shouldn’t bank on driving it home. He states that the car has been sitting for a long time (try 19 years) and you never know what might break on the trip home. Seems like sound advice to me. He also says that everything works as it is supposed to.

So, what to do with this Firebird? Personally, I’d be quite surprised if the auction price goes terribly high. If the final sale price is low it would make a good base for a project where you could then transform it into exactly the Firebird that you have always wanted without the risk of destroying a potentially collectible car. Of course, you could always just restore it and have a Firebird that is different from the majority of Firebirds that grace the roads today.

Gas tank also appears to have a good size leak in it.

Not anything pretty here, but if strut towers/frame are solid it could be a pretty fun project. We all know the 231 V6 can make some serious power…

When I came upon the word “silencer,” I knew this was written by the Aussie :)

If that’s oil being blown out of the muffler onto the gas tank, then the 3.8 is in dire need of a rebuild.

LS swap it, make it safe and legal. Check.
Grow a mullet with your greying hair. Check.
Dig out all 80’s hair band cassettes. Check.
Attach three feather carnival roach clip rear view mirror. Check.
    Now proudly drive it.

Didn’t think as many Firebirds were made as I have seen on Barn Finds in the last month.

I agree with make it safe, inspect with the idea of an LS swap from a good auction Tahoe engine and transmission, running gear, subframe connectors. Maybe Rockford clone colors, then enjoy the wheels off of it!! Gotta have some fun before I go! Good luck to the new owner and seller.

No air but snowflake wheels? Interesting find. Wish I was closer. If anybody here on Barn Finds buys this car, I have a brand new repro armrest/console pad in this color–which I believe is called Carmine Red.

That sure is a big hood with nothing on it.

I like what I see. Just needs some TCL. Would buy it in a heartbeat if I had a place to work on it. I live in a townhouse and can’t work on cars in my neighborhood. Barry Klotz
