Pop-Top Camper: 1979 Dodge B300 Van

Sometimes, the stories that accompany a listing for a vehicle are more intriguing than the cars themselves. In the case of this 1979 Dodge B300 camper van, the seller alludes to the fact that he’s an airline pilot and used the van as a “crash pad” before driving it from California to Oklahoma. The stories this van could tell! Regardless, it’s in decent shape overall and just needs some updates and equipment upgrades inside to make it even better. Find it here on craigslist for $9,000 or best offer.

Thanks to Barn Finds reader PRA4SNW for the tip. When you fly, it’s inevitable you hear about pilots and flight attendants who have to maintain a certain number of rest hours before stepping back onto the plane. The importance of this is obvious, but sometimes, the accommodations leave a lot to be desired – I’ve seen some fairly awful hotels near the local airport used as places of refuge by airline staff, and this van looks way more pleasant than those budget-minded establishments. The interior of this Dodge is in good shape overall with some awesome features, including plenty of storage, a sink, and a non-functioning refrigerator.

The listing does not include photos of the pop-top area, but I can only assume that’s where you sleep – unless this table folds away and the bench pulls out. If it’s anything like a VW Westfalia, the canvas on the pop-up tent section can become fairly tattered, so you’d want to get a clear understanding of what you’re working with up top before assuming this Dodge is sleep-ready. Of course, when the seller says “crash pad,” perhaps he just means this was a mobile party rig for off-duty airline staff?

Regardless, the paint job and decals are awesome, and even if the pop-top needs some work, it’s worth messing with to make this Dodge even more useful – and potentially valuable at the same time. Replace the refrigerator, get the A/C working, and upgrade the stereo and you’ll be in fine shape to use this truck for both long- and short-distance trips. The asking price seems fair, and leaves some budget for future improvements – maybe you can even park it near the airport and make a few bucks as a mobile VRBO rental?

    A mobile b&b-interesting idea.
However, one would hope that the term “crash pad” isn’t a double entendres..

Neat rig. Nice size. Nice that it’s a one ton. Never seen one quite like it. Surprised it didn’t end up derelict and junked twenty plus years ago.

If it is as it looks, not a terrible price in today’s climate. You get a classic van, a camper and something you can pull a trailer with if needed.

Wow. Pretty cool setup not all hacked apart. 360 4bbl with 4.10 rear end will like the gas! The best part is that it has the very rare and desirable passenger sun visor option.

    it means ‘sleep place’.
Also the table lowers to serve as a lrg bed w/the seats/couches. That table comes forward to serve as driver’s passenger’s table (if seats swivel/pivot) or kitchen table near fridge/sink (see silver circle on floor, 2nd pic?). Both R typical of these/boats…
318 would B nice, wish the 225 could do it (slant 6 would need that rear end). Change out rear gear if owning/the bent8 in use.
