Price Reduced! 1962 Studebaker GT Hawk

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

May I be candid with you? Somebody, anybody, needs to buy this ’62 Studebaker GT Hawk before I do. It’s across the country from me, I’d need to rent more storage, and it just doesn’t make any sense. My only other defense is an attempt to find something wrong with it (the California plates do NOT match the Oregon advertisement – is it real?), but I’m getting itchy. I’m not sure whether to thank the ever-diligent T.J. for finding it or not. Either way, it’s on Craigslist (for now) with a lowered asking price of $11,000.

Is there anything in here to dissuade me from making the call? The upholstery may be torn beneath that scraggly, shaggy seat cover. Probably not, the rest of the seats look fine. Maybe the steering wheel is cracked under the Pep Boys pleather steering wheel cover. Who cares? It’s a four-speed car…that just makes it worse! Nope, nothing in here but yet another classically-styled Studebaker interior. I love these things.

Maybe there’s something under the hood that doesn’t look quite right. Nope, just a 289 four barrel with 225 horsepower that’s perfect for keeping up on expressways and leaving two scratches on the pavement. Oh, does it have a Twin Traction differential, you ask? Yes it does.

OK, it needs a set of heater hoses, so that will cost me ten or twenty dollars. But the new power brake booster and exhaust system will more than make up for that. No help there.

Well, perhaps the color isn’t to my taste. Nope, it is. It’s turquoise, which is the perfect color for almost any early-to-mid-1960s automobile. Perhaps parts availability isn’t good enough. Nah, the Studebaker Drivers Club is very active, and parts aren’t generally a problem.

Maybe it’s rusty. Unfortunately not, at least according to the owner; it’s advertised as being a rust-free, three-owner Hawk with 70,000 miles on it. There have been plenty of GT Hawks for sale on Barn Finds over the last few months, and this one looks like the perfect driver. In all seriousness, aside from the disparate plate/state conundrum, the only problem mentioned in the advertisement is that a brake is hanging up, and that could be something as simple as a parking brake cable or a brake hose. The owner can no longer work on the car “due to age and mobility issues,” and “cannot afford to hire [work] done,” so the repairs will be up to the new owner. So what do you think? Are you a buyer? Please? Let us know if you save this author from himself.

This is 5x better than the next listing for the 55 Chubby, at 1/5th the cost AND IT RUNS! This should go fast…

Hey Stan, I’ve seen the video of this gentleman. And he has had some impressive track record ( pun intended) with his Studebaker. The Old Studebaker truck in the background of the video is what he actually uses to transport the car! Even though hes older he still gets out there and has a blast doing it. And that Lark is very quick too.

Aaron, I’m not a buyer, just a former ’53 coupe owner who you have convinced me you should buy this car. It’s a beauty!

These were basically a luxury car without the luxury price, and not a bad swan song for Studebaker. One thing Stude had down since the first “low-boy” in 1953 was their dashes. All business and good looking too. I think the two most popular colors for these GT Hawks were turquoise or white, it seems nearly every one I’ve seen lately is one or the other. (The same could be said for the Avanti). If the person who buys this car has a basic toolbox, they should be able to fix whatever this car needs.

I tend to prefer the 54s and 55s with the Bonneville Salt Flats aerodynamic front end. However this Hawk with the 4 speed, buckets, and return-to-low fins and turquoise color is a stunner. The stainless steel insert in the boot lid is really nice. Chrome looks great. Hard to believe the price is so low. I’d make this my daily driver. Thank heavens it’s on the west coast and I don’t have to make a decision.

Posting already deleted, somebody already grab it. What a great deal. At $11k that was a steal. Good luck to the new owner.

Thank goodness! If I’m going to buy a car from far away (thousands of miles in this case), I like it to be through a medium where I might have some recourse (if that’s actually a thing). What a cool car though…

Every time I see a Studebaker GT Hawk it just reminds me of how far ahead of there time they were and how good looking they were then and now.
