Pumpkin Orange: 1974 Hornet Sportabout

amc

I grew up with an orange 1971 Sportabout that was even plainer than this one. Dad did eventually take it to the local garage and have aftermarket air conditioning installed, but the AM radio never even got an FM converter, and the dog-dish hubcaps were awfully plain. This one at least has the wood grain siding and full wheel covers to break up the orangeness! Hailing from Leland, Illinois and listed for sale here on eBay with a buy-it-now price of only $1,700, this Hornet is ready to drive! I can tell you from first-hand experience that parallel parking one of these cars without power steering is a good substitute for time in the weight room. Just like Dad’s, this one doesn’t have power steering, brakes, or windows. Ours lasted close to 200,000 miles and was still going strong with the next owner when I went off to college. This one has around 150,000 on the 232 6-cylinder. How about buying it and putting some more miles on it? This is the type of car I’d like to show up with at my local cars-n-coffee!

I can see finding a car like this in Leland, Illinois. It is a very small farming community just down highway #34 from where my youngest son lives. There are still quite a few old cars running around out there. This is a nice example of the AMC line up. Would make a nice grocery getter, nothing fancy just 70’s family utility.

if the rust is not bad this would make a great driver. no need for your gym membership as this will give you a fun workout while you drive. we had one, bought new, with a 304/auto loaded that was a very fast sleeper. great find

I did my drivers test in one of these when I turned 16.
My mother’s was dark green metallic…. The Green Hornet.

As a teenager I put The Green Hornet through it’s paces. They do fairly well offroad, well actually blasting through a farmer’s field being chased by his big dog. I didn’t know that a dog could run that fast.
    Fun times…

I bought this car and had a very enjoyable trip back to the southern part of Illinois in it, the gentleman selling the car was very nice and told me some of the background of the car. A car full of great memories.
