Put Away Dry: 1993 GMC Typhoon

The GMC Typhoon and its pickup sibling the Syclone are such special trucks, true performance machines that have held their values seemingly since new (they are that good). However, they’re also prone to abuse and over-zealous modifications, a temptation anytime there’s an opportunity to ramp up the boost. That’s why this Typhoon is so refreshing, as its mileage has been kept low and it seems to have just one modification that’s hardly egregious. Find the Typhoon here on eBay listed for $39,995 or best offer.

The body appears excellent, with the correct graphics still affixed. Wheels show no major sign of deterioration and the contrasting bodykit looks free of damage. Mileage is recorded at a mere 28,810 and the seller is a broker that has listed the truck on the owner’s behalf. While the Typhoon was based on the GMC Jimmy, there’s little here to remind you of the family-friendly SUV aside from the general shape and front end treatment. Power was impressive, rated at 280 b.h.p. and 360 lb.ft. of torque.

The interior presents quite well, with clean floormats, nicely preserved leather seats, uncracked dash and the OEM steering wheel still in place. One of the most attractive features of the Typhoon (in my opinion) is the overall usability – there’s still a backseat and cargo area, allowing you to enjoy the neck-snapping performance without sacrificing the ability to bring a friend or some luggage along. It’s also modern enough to make it livable for longer road trips, although fuel economy won’t be great.

The one modification the seller references seems like a sensible one; a Kenne Bell “Boost-A-Pump,” which according to the website achieves the following: “…(it) is clearly the most efficient and cost effective method of increasing pump flow and the HP potential of any modified vehicle (supercharged, turbocharged, naturally aspirated or Nitrous).” With one sensible modification and no obvious signs of abuse, this Typhoon has to be one the very few that wasn’t ridden hard and put away wet.

These are rare in this condition. If I had a choice right now I would have another SS Trailblazer. One bad fast truck.

This seems preferable to the “rare” Grand Nationals and Firebirds that have been clogging this site recently. (In my opinion)

I wanted one of these when they were new, but I couldn’t afford one, it looks like that’s still true! I would love to have this truck ,but I still can’t afford it. I can’t remember what sticker was, but I think it was less than this asking price. You have to pay to play.

Forty large. I think not. $30 ish. Nice truck though. I believe that this was the ‘Vette beater in the day, for the 1/4 mile.

Have to agree with you. The latest issue of “Automobile” magazine has a panel of experts from Hagerty, Bonhams, RM, and Barrett-Jackson rating the 1993 Typhoon as a “Buy” with an average price of $15,600. I guess I would agree with $30-ish . I would also guess the seller would disagree.

Would rather have a 1993 first year Ford SVT Lightning pickup. Much more fun.

That was built right here in my hometown of Shreveport, LA.

When these and the Syclone were new one of the car mags ran a cover article putting the Syclone against a Ferrari (don’t recall the model) in a 1/4 mile.
The little truck with a little Southern attitude won.
These were genius in their time.

Bought a leftover “92 new in early “93 in Pittsburgh & drive it home to indiana.
It was my first new car & enjoyed it enthusiastucally until “99 or so. Ski trips through the Rockies wrre an annual event. It was unstoppable until enough snow accumulated that the front air dam became a snowplow & it high-centered itself.
Luxurious for the time, comfy, quick as heck (esp once chipped), flexible, great handling on smooth roads & tons of fun. Never got 20mpg but close.
I don’t miss it. Crude & clunky at times but so glad I owned it.
