Ragtop Needs Restoring: 1962 Chevrolet Impala

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

As Dinah Shore would croon for years, “See the USA in Your Chevrolet” was a popular way to go decade after decade. And what better way to do it than in a 1962 Chevrolet Impala convertible. Though scarcely seen today, Chevy built more than 75,000 of them that model year alone. Though it runs, this ragtop has seen better days and has ample rust to go along with the crunch it once took in the hindquarters. Located in Abbotsford, British Columbia, this project is available here on craigslist for $12,500 OBO USD. As always, “Curvette” has come through with another interesting tip.

When Chevrolet redesigned the full-size Impala/Bel Air/Biscayne in 1961, gone were the batwings of 1959-60. More sensible styling would prevail going forward, and each year would be an evolution of the one before. IMO, the ’62s were the best-looking of the lot and this run would be where the Super Sport took off with buyers. The seller’s well-worn Impala is not an SS, but it was probably sharp in its day with a once-shiny white exterior and red interior.

This drop-top has a 327 cubic inch V8, which was in its first year in 1962. It also has an automatic transmission which is probably a 2-speed Powerglide. Whether either is numbers matching isn’t mentioned. It was well-equipped with power steering, brakes, seats, and windows. Since the seller mentions that 2,500 Impala convertibles were produced in Canada, so we assume this is one of them.

The body of this Chevy is clearly where the majority of the restoration work will lie. Rust is quite prevalent and the right rear quarter took a hit that extends to the rear valance and bumper. However, what’s here is said to be complete but rough from years of inactivity. The title for this Chevy is MIA, just adding to things to do once you get started.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen power windows on one of these before. Nice options, but at that price, I don’t think anyone would even bother to look at it. If anyone does, I hope for their sake they carefully check that it isn’t hopelessly rotted.

$12k for this hunk of beaten metal? They must be smoking a lot of something up in BC. It is a shame to see the car like this because I’m sure it was a great looker at one time.

The missing title is not hard to rectify here in BC, if the seller wants to do a little leg work and spend a couple hundred bucks. Seems like a lazy seller with champagne dreams here…

Maybe if it was an original 409 dual quad car it would be worth bringing back but even then I don’t know. Too much money for too little.

Good grief, drop a zero and maybe another Canadian will buy it. But stateside its not the kind of car chop shops buy for the convertible bits and a vin tag

Needs complete off frame restoration with new rockers, quarters, and floors ~ maybe frame as well. No title. 62 was my favorite year Impala but this one is way too far gone to mess with. Parts car at best.

Sad to think that this wreck was, in its heyday, a head turner. But former glory doesn’t buy current worth.

A LOT of money here maybe get the red one in the background with it and both for under 10k It does have power windows and power seat. If it was a Mopar they would want 20k.
