Rare 5-Speed: 1986 Pontiac Firebird

This 1986 Pontiac Firebird is a rare find both for its impressive condition and for being a factory-built 5-speed, which the seller contends makes it one of just 500 cars made that year with three pedals. Condition looks tidy, with two-tone paint and cross-lace wheels and under 25,000 original miles. The seller notes it was in storage until 2019, and that it comes with the original window sticker. Throw in the T-tops and the reliable 305 under the hood and you have an instant classic. The seller seems to know this, as he’s asking for a heady $22,500 and has listed it here on craigslist on Long Island.

In general, the third-generation Firebird was a bit of a mixed bag, with earlier models still suffering under the baggage of the malaise era, while later examples became scorchingly fast with the introduction of turbocharging. The Firebird and its Camaro sibling were straightforward in their execution, either being a muscle car with decent horsepower to back up the claim, or a hairdresser’s ride with lazy six-cylinder powerplants paired to automatic transmissions. While Ford had Saleen and the turbocharged SVO models to spice up the lineup, GM seemed content to sell its muscle car line in two flavors, aside from limited production specials  like the notchback or the turbocharged Indy Pace Car.

If you wanted to march to the beat of a different drummer, ordering a Firebird or Camaro of this generation with the five-speed manual was one way to go. It seems relatively few buyers wanted three pedals in their muscle car around this time, at least based on what typically comes up for sale these days. The Fox body Mustang GT seems to show up with far greater regularity in stick-shift form, so this Firebird is a treat with its factory-ordered 5-speed installed. The interior is in so-so condition, and would likely present far better if it had a proper detailing before its photo shoot.

The 305 V8 is tried and true, and the seller notes it features the “…last carburetor design used by Pontiac.” Another unique feature is the “…high-rear stop light on roof line,” which the seller claims is a one-year option. The Firebird is well-equipped with premium stereo, air conditioning, power windows, and power locks. In addition to the window sticker, it will come with a factory manual. Supposedly in one-owner care since 1987, it is registered and ready for street use. I feel the asking price is high, but it’s certainly a special car with some rare options that make it worth a better price than your typical used third-gen.

    High rear stop light? To the seller, it’s a CHMSL, Center high mounted stop lamp.

      And, the CHMSL became a federal requirement for the 1986 model year. It was not an option.

    This isn’t just a Firebird, it’s a Trans Am, one of nearly 49,000 Trans Ams built for 1986. The owner’s claim of 500 5-speeds is probably missing a zero, at minimum.

    I would think 5 years ago you would be lucky to get 10 grand for this car. I know everything is crazy now but still think 15 grand would be tops for this one at the present time. I could easily be wrong.

    Needless to say, the 305 TBI engine was about, what, 170HP? Yeah…1 of 500 my rear. These cars are turds.
