Rare Air: 1955 Cadillac Series 62

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

1955 Cadillacs were made famous by a young man from Tupelo, Mississippi… specifically, a pink one. Well, actually, two of them – the first one was apparently destroyed in an auto accident while traveling between gigs. This one does not belong to the estate of the late Elvis Presley, but you can get it and paint it pink if you like, when you buy it from this listing here on eBay or this one on craigslist, in the outskirts of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The 1954-1956 Cadillac 60/62-series represent the 4th generation of “C-Body” cars and were a part of the dream of many Americans during the days of chrome-plating and early tail-fins. Weighing in around 4,700 lbs and taking up 213 inches of length by 80 inches of width, these all-American comfort machines could be had with a choice of two V8 engines and an automatic transmission, as well as multiple comfort options, such as air conditioning. Remember, A/C in those days was rather expensive and not often selected by buyers.

The seller of this restorable beauty tells us that it runs and drives, and includes all the trim and such, but will need a few things to be totally roadworthy. We learn that it has about 90,000 miles and had some restoration-and-repair work done already, but has been sitting long enough for a few things to begin deteriorating. From the pictures in the two listings, we can see that there is rust, the chrome would need re-plated, and some of the trim is off of the car, but it looks otherwise to be in good shape.

Fully-restored examples of this car are asking well above the craigslist asking price of $8,500 for this car, and as of the time this article was written, the eBay bid was only at $1,200. What do you think, what would you do with it if it were yours? Is it worth the asking price?

I wouldn’t paint it pink. After all Aretha is already hauled and planted. I would however wear my blue suede shoes while driving this one!

Besides the fact that Elvis owned two of.
these, I think of the movie Driving Miss
Daisy when I see one of these cars. I
agree with NotSure, I’d drive this one too.
I’d have to put our newly acquired Ford
F-350 project on hold just to get this
one running and driving again! BTW,
anyone know where I can get a set of
factory fuel tanks for my truck? Seems
like some knothead discarded them and
put in a gas tank from a Corvette instead!
I’ll keep you guys posted along the way.

I would paint it pink in honor of Aretha Franklin, a classy car and a classy lady with a beautiful voice. Good luck to the new owner.

I learned to drive on the logging trails of northern Wisconsin in this car. With my mother and grandmother in the back seat getting increasingly louder as they said, “SLOW DOWN!” and my grandfather at a loss as to how to make me understand that giggling maniacally was not a confidence inspiring driving style.

These cars are from the era when Cadillacs were indeed the Standard of the World – all chrome and substance.

Everything I did wrong and everything I did right in a car started with a 1955 Cadillac. It will forever hold a special place in my heart.

The time is rapidly approaching when automobiles as we know them will cease to exist and the independence and sheer joy of driving will die along with them. But history has a way a of repeating itself.
Horses were once exclusively only a mode of transportation but after the auto age dawned they became objects of pleasure and adoration, treated much better than they had been in the past.

One can only hope that automobiles will find the same fate. Especially 1955 Cadillacs

As I often say, spend as much as you can afford to buy the best possible example of the car you’re wanting. In the long run, you are far better off.

What a beautiful car. I would own this in a second. Because I live in the desert, it’s a big plus plus to have an a/c. Love the chrome and the broadway whites. I would not paint it. Buff it out, touch-up and restore, but keep the original color.

But, what’s up with the tail lights? Anyone else notice that?

I notice that the one on the left is ajar. That’s where the fuel cap lives.
