Rare Color: 1973 BMW 2002 TII Project

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The BMW 2002 has a huge cult following and for good reason. The fuel-injected models became popular in the United States and led to BMWs popularity. They are quick and boxy and were able to solve BMW’s struggle with passing smog. The example at hand is listed here on eBay in Denver, Colorado, with the option to bid or buy it outright for $20k. Thanks to zappenduster for the tip!

The exterior is finished in the original Ceylon paint. The car is in need of bodywork and potentially a re-paint. The seller notes that there are rust spots throughout. There is also a visible dent that could potentially be fixed with paintless dent removal. The wheels and tires are in rough shape and likely need to be replaced. This car could be stunning with some work. We can hope that the original paint can be touched up rather than having to be stripped and redone.

The interior is finished in black throughout. There appears to be a continuous beige carpet. The driver’s seat has a large tear in its base that could potentially be fixed. If not, the next owner will need to replace it in order for the car to be fully restored. It would be very neat to see this car be put back to its prime.

A 2.0L inline-4 engine sends 130 horsepower to the wheels via a 4-speed manual transmission. The seller notes that the engine needs a rebuild. 2002s are very special cars and it’s sad to see one in this disheveled condition. The price is hefty for a non-operable vehicle with rust and dents, but after this one is cleaned up it will be worth significantly more. This project is definitely an investment. The next owner has some work ahead of them but it will no doubt pay off down the road. If you’ve been searching for a 1973 BMW 2002 TII, this one could be for you. Contact the seller on craigslist before it’s gone.

Pretty grungy for the price. Wouldn’t buy it without an eyeball look underneath. These cars were as rust prone as any the the European cars of the era. Got over a year in one and they are a ball to drive.

“Contact the seller on craigslist before it’s gone?” It’s on eBay. My other dream car besides the Porsche 356c. Ugly color though. If I were to get this it would get a repaint in Brown or Orange.

With only “10” sales and a 66.7% rating, I would be vewy, vewy careful…

Had a black ’74. Fun car, even with the Fred Flintstone floorboards. Blew a head gasket inside the Baltimore Harbor tunnel during rush hour one day. Still get Xmas cards from the tow truck driver.

Bit too pricey for the condition, I do like it, the color too. Looking at the front the bumpers skewed, front end hit? I do understand about the dumb question comment from the buyer.

Please don’t ask the seller no stupid questions.

I would say this is more in the $15K range (or a little less). Need to know about the underneath, shock towers and under/behind the clutch slave as well as rockers. If it has been a Colorado car it’s whole life it could be a good deal. All the injection stuff is in place and it has the correct (to a TII) nose. This one could deserve a bare metal restoration.

If I were to own this terrible coloured car, and lived in Colorado, the first thing I would do is to paint it Colorado Orange like the ’69 Roundie that I owned back in about 1983. Fantastic cars. If you have never driven one then you haven’t lived! I have owned over 200 cars, everything from Ferrari’s, Porsches, Healey’s, Four Mustangs, E Type Jaguar’s etc. and of all of them the Roundie was my favourite car of the lot.

Still love how the “Ultimate Driving Machine” doesn’t have an Oil Pressure gauge

The Germans obviously didn’t believe in them and felt that the idiot light was all you needed. Worked in my buses, ghia, different bugs and all my ’02’s. Never (yet) have owned a 356 but on my ultimate garage list! A last ’02 is probably a more realistic ambition.

The front panel is not the original Tii part as it has the tube to fit an air intake hose for a carburettor car, may well be an aftermarket panel,

You are correct Patrick. My guess is that it was in a front end accident and the front clip has been replaced. Also , why is the radiator at that angle?

In their prime they were wonderful cars compared to almost everything else on the road. Went around corners like they were on banked rails, saved my life once, had I been in my wife’s Camaro, let alone my Pontiac Bonneville of the time, I would have been in the trees, probably upside down, with a seat belt but no airbags. Inspect for rust, particularly shock towers, floor pans and fenders can be fixed easily, but punched through shock towers led many to the junkyard.

Needs everything, so you’re far better off to find one that’s already restored. Besides, the owner sounds like a jerk: “…don’t ask me no stupid questions.”

A sign of the times and pretty much the norm now. It’s clear that they failed English classes as well, but these days no one gets failing grades and they just get pushed through. The result of that is here. My solution is to ignore. There will always be another (better) car for sale by someone less ornery and for a potentially more reasonable price. That is until eventually everyone is like this seller.

One wonders if it is a stupid question to ask why the seller rating is so low? Or why the BIN price for such a needy car is approaching levels where you can find quite nice cars?

pretty rare being a tii,and Ceylon to boot, with what looks like the original nose panel….not many done in that color originally either, and I have one from the factory that was done originally same color in saddle leather and sunroof that was a factory reps car that I am currently restoring..I can tell you having had a shop for many years and doing all the work myself,it is not an inexpensive process to retore one these days…Probobly better off to do the minimum to get it running and driving and enjoy it as an “as found”…

Yea, way overpriced. With a non-running motor you can’t evaluate the rest of the drivetrain. It’s been hit in the front if it’s a real TII, or it could be a “bitsa” built up from TII parts at one time from a rusted out car. If there’s any rust underneith then it’s in need of a full restoration and not worth more than 10-12k. Yes, it has the injection system, and that appears to be complete, but if the engine isn’t running you may need to rebuild the pump and that’s around $3k just by itself. It would be very easy to be way underwater starting at $20k.
