Rarely Seen Pick-Up: 1987 Jeep Comanche

If you are a fan of pick-up trucks, then at some point you will likely have lusted over classic trucks on your search. These are appreciating in value fast and one particular version that’s gaining popularity is the 1987 Jeep Comanche, with its ‘bling’ chrome grille at the front, and nothing but practicality with its cargo-bed at the back. This Jeep is located in Danville, Illinois, and is available on eBay here with just one day left and a BIN price of $11,500.

The Jeep Comanche was in production for a relatively short amount of time, just 7 years from 1985 to 1992 and with over 190,000 made during this time, you would expect to see more on the road. However, the ravages of time, a hard life, and a lack of interest in preserving these until recently mean that this is a rare pick-up. Interestingly this car has been exceptionally well looked after, although it has a high mileage of 190,653 miles on the dash. The seller claims that the Jeep has never been off-road.

This Jeep rides on non-original wheels, but the seller is including the originals with the sale. Part of the appeal of this Jeep is the chrome grill which is in great condition and shows how well looked after this is. Matched to the rust-free under-body and spotless interior, this Jeep has likely had a long life of trundling along the highways without ever seeing a speck of dirt or a boulder to climb over. Luckily the unibody architecture up-front is paired to a perimeter frame for the cargo bed which means that this will still go off-road should you need it. We don’t see any photos of the truck bed, so cannot be sure if it was used to haul goods, but given the overall condition of the rest of the truck, we are confident that it is in good condition too.

These Jeeps were powered by a 4.0-liter engine paired to a 5-speed manual transmission with 4WD which gives it enough grunt to haul, or bumble along the highway too. My parents had a regular Jeep when I was growing up, and one of the worst parts about it was the back bench seats being so uncomfortable. With this Comanche version, no need to worry about that, all you need to worry about is if this is a good 30-year-old pick-up for your driveway?

I seen one of these.. had a switch for 2wd to 4wd. Electronic setup from the factory. There was an option for a select track which had the lever on the floor. Have a good weekend. 🐻

Am I the only one seeing a non-spotless seat?

Maybe the prescription on my glasses expired . . .

A huge NO to any vintage utility vehicles coming out of Illinois. Rust is guaranteed.

It is to bad that Stellantis can’t make something like this now!

Not sure about the rust issue. The one undercarriage picture doesn’t look bad. When I purchased vehicles sight unseen in the past I have always made arrangements to have a 3rd party inspect it for me. I honestly don’t know if it’s worth the asking price. Finding a 4 liter Comanche with a 5-speed that’s still nice is no easy task. I never understood why Chrysler killed this off after the merger. IMHO the Comanche is 10X the Dakota. To me this truck is the perfect size and the 4 liter 6 is icing on the cake. It’s no fair the good die young.

My Dad bought one of these new when they first came out in 1986. He has the chopped off 4 cyl, auto and the 7 foot box. Ordered the special gold color but no radio or even a cig lighter. It did have the cloth seats though. He gave it to my cousin when he stopped driving, who literally drove it into the ground with nearly 300,000 miles and still going he scrapped it. Floors had rusted out but it still looked pretty good.

It’s 2wd and those are TJ Rubi 16 in wheels, one of my favorite factory wheels.

Bought an 86 new when they came out. Bought another one (an 87) for a daily drive in 2002. Paid all of 1200 bucks for it then. First one was 4cylunder 4 speed. 2nd one was a 6 cylinder and an automatic. When these were new with the 6 banger they were the fastest small truck out there. Great trucks.

In 86 I went to a local AMC/Renault dealer and they had both a GTA in white and a new Silver Comanche Eliminator. I drove both and were enjoyable.

What I remember the most is the Eliminator was an inline 4.0 and manual 5 speed transmission. That was the first truck that would throw you in the seat under hard acceleration and smoke the tires in three gears before letting off.

Very impressive and know why Cryco wanted to kill off the Comanche as to not embarrass the Dodge truck gang. The Dakota.

My mother had an 87 in charcoal grey with Rancho suspension and American Racing polished wheels. Rear roll bar. Really nice. She drove it to Baja. Kept about 10 years. So it for $1500 still very nice, little oxidized. Fun to drive with Stick.

    $11500? Heck NO.
