Rare Ragtop: 1968 Mercury Montego MX

OK folks, when was the last time you saw one of these? A 1968 Mercury Montego convertible? The seller claims that it’s one of only 3,300 built and I think it’s the first that I have ever seen, or at least, noticed. Let’s check out this Lake Worth, Florida domiciled drop-top. It’s available, here on craigslist for $18,000.

Montego was a new name for Mercury’s intermediate model in ’68, a model that was formerly known as the Comet series. Models included the Montego Brougham, Montego MX – such as our subject car, Montego, and a stripper, called the Comet – so no, the Comet didn’t go completely away. The sporty version of the Montego retained the Cyclone name, and like cousin Ford, it was offered in both fastback and notchback two-door hardtop body styles. Interestingly, the Montego shared a lot of styling cues with the full-sized models like the Monterey and Park Lane.

The seller states “low original mileage” with a reading of only 49K miles but there’s no documentation to back up that number. Referenced as having been restored, this Merc shows very nicely. The finish looks like Calypso Coral but whether that was its original hue is unknown. Regardless, it looks great and there is no sign of dings, dents, creases, or rust. No images of this Montego in top-up mode, unfortunately, are included but based on the boot color, the assumption is that it’s black. The American Racing mag wheels are a perfect addition to a car of this vintage.

Power is courtesy of a 210 gross HP 302 CI V8 engine which the seller correctly states as being in its first year of availability. There is no description of the motor’s running prowess but it has been modified with at least an open-element air cleaner, chromed valve covers, and an aluminum radiator. If there are other mods, they’re not referenced. Based on the presence of a compressor, this convertible is air-conditioned, an option not that often found on ’60s vintage convertibles. As is often the case, a three-speed automatic transmission handles gear shifting chores.

The interior is in excellent condition” claims the listing and I would have to agree! The bucket seat/center console combo was an option and fortunately selected by the original purchaser – it lends itself perfectly to a convertible’s free spirit. We’ll go with the assumption that the restoration included reupholstering as the seats aren’t showing signs of wear, age, or sun damage. The headrests are a curious inclusion, they weren’t required by law until the beginning of ’69 but they were an option in ’68. The aftermarket wood steering wheel is a nice replacement for the non-descript original piece.

The seller claims “matching numbers” but I can’t imagine that matters on a car like this Montego – it’s not a high dollar exalted collectible but it is a fine example of the variety that American auto buyers had at their fingertips a half-century ago. The fact that it’s a rare convertible from a fallen flag manufacturer just makes it that much more attractive, wouldn’t you agree?

This seems like a really nice car for the money. The body and paint look great along with the interior. It’s nice to see buckets in place of the usual bench and the console looks great. I like the aftermarket steering wheel, too. The only thing I’d change are the wheels. I know that a lot of guys like them but to me, those muscle car wheels don’t look quite right on a small block cruiser. I’d look go for original styled steel wheels and the dog dish hubcaps with the Mercury Man head in the center. This car is also a fairly scarce car and has A/C. Love to have this one.

I had one for awhile . 1968 Montevideo MX convertible . Bought it to restore but was rough . Very hard to find parts for such as chrome trim and sheet metal ,at least when you live in northern British Columbia Canada . It would of been a great cruising car ,built new with a 351c 4V .

Very sharp drop-top! Seems like a fair asking price with the low miles and since it’s had a recent refurbishing, too. With Spring right around the corner, this should sell soon. I like the wheels but some type of Fomoco sporty type from that era might look better.
