Rare Stripe Delete: 1998 Dodge Viper GTS

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

When it comes to the Dodge Viper, there’s almost an automatic assumption that it will come with loud racing stripes ripping down the center of the vehicle. Credit the original GTS coupe that was an effigy of sorts to Carroll Shelby with its blue paint job and white racing stripes. That image of the GTS was burned into our collective memory after being splashed across magazine covers, press events, and race tracks around the country. The car shown here is one of the rare ones that came without stripes and also sports a subdued silver paint job. Find it here on eBay where bidding has reached $47,100 with the reserve unmet.

This Viper GTS is an interesting find in a few different ways beyond the “tame” color scheme. The seller claims it belonged to one owner who passed away in 2020, presumably adding most of the 25,000 miles on the clock. It went to the original owner’s daughter after that, but likely just from a paperwork perspective or for the purpose of settling the estate. The Viper is mostly stock outside of an aftermarket exhaust system and headers. Otherwise, it even appears to retain it stock ride height. The listing notes the tires have a date code of 2020, and that’s also when the fluids were last changed.

Silver over black is about as conventional as it gets. On a Camry, it’s boring; on a car like the Viper GTS, it’s interesting. The lising photos show a ton of underbody shots which all appear to confirm that this car is very clean and dry underneath. With its location in Texas, that’s hardly a surprise, and fortunately, there’s no evidence of sun damage inside the car – although the creasing on the seats is a bit surprising for a low mileage specimen. When you’re dealing with cars that are often placed on ice as soon as they’re brought home, minor flaws can unfortunately seem large on vehicles that are rarely driven.

The 8.0L V10 made around 450 horsepower channeled to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. We all know what a brute the Viper could be, but the GTS coupe added a layer of civility to the package, and it was certainly the most attractive incarnation of the original Viper. This car may not be visually exciting, but I bet if you dug into the production numbers, a silver coupe with no stripes wold absolutely be on the rare side. Would you let that sway you, or hold out for a more aggressive color scheme?

WHAT A NICE GTS VIPER!! I love a silver car because it doesn’t look that dirty when it is. I also dig that it doesn’t stand out with the Vibrant Colors some of these had with Stripes on them that really drew ATTENTION to the car. Not something I would go for myself, which is WHY I really love this Viper. First one I’ve see like this too. It would be a blast to drive also. Hope it finds a good home. GLWA

Those side grates and the conical air intakes are aftermarket too. But even so $47k is low for this car unless there’s a wreck on the Carfax.

These were still a car you could have your way. Inasmuch as the car was pretty much the car you still had some package choices and colors were almost wide open. Selection is nice when you’re forking over the dough.

Bidding is at $48200 as of 12:40. This Viper has a more elegant and stealthy appearance with the subdued silver paint , plus I actually prefer these WITHOUT the stripes, but that’s just me. Vipers are “Hey, look at me” types of cars like Lambos and that’s why this subdued-looking one isn’t generating the kinds of bids the seller is expecting. I would love to have this one though.

Mine didn’t have stripes. Most of the Vipers at the Viper Invitationals (I went to three of them) didn’t have stripes.

With the Viper the stripes were a $5000 option and were painted. So that’s why some Vipers did not have stripes. I had a 1999 GTS silver with blue stripes stunning combo.

They always looked like they’re bent with the body lines level on the front fenders and from the rest of the car the body lines are angled up towards the rear.

No sale reserve not met. High bid was $48,000.00. Vipers are still treated as a step child in the collector world.
