Maybe just regular transportation in 1978, but this thing would really stand out among all the shiny jellybeans of today. Almost looks like a classic-era limo in comparison.
What a nice clean car! I’d enjoy it very much!
For me, this car would be way more enjoyable to take to the local cruise-in than if I owned a 69 Camaro or comparable muscle car.
Car looks very good. I like the 70’s vintage “intermediate” Fords of various flavors (Gran Torino, Elite, LTD II, 77-79 T-Bird, even Cougars such as this). Love the period-correct green interior.
Bob in TN, you are so right. I was so tired of going to car shows with rows of Camaros, Mustangs, Corvettes, GTOs, 55/56/57 Chevrolets and the like. It was hard to find cars that maybe were once normal everyday transportation, that maybe evoked memories of someone I knew who drove one, and in this day really stand out. I did not buy my 1978 Thunderbird to take to shows but to enjoy. However, I recently entered it in a car show and enjoyed conversations with several people of their memories of a Thunderbird or similar car. The show I entered had about 250 cars, and there were only two Thunderbirds, my 1978 and a 1957.
Oh, Cougar,,,you were once so proud,,look what they reduced you to.(they even made a Cougar wagon for further humiliation) Nice car, but tis’ no Cougar.
Well said, Howard.
I once (1985) owned a 1978 Cougar wagon..Puke Green with matching interior. Low mileage, under 50k. Worst car I ever owned. Ate window motors and bulbs. Gave it away and cheered when it drove away.No wonder they only made a very few.u
Neat. Love the Jade interior! Very 1978.
Nice Car.
A friend of mine had one and him and 2 friends drove it to the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and they all slept in it while there.
I was in college at the time and couldn’t go.

Great to see. The sort of glitz and glamour most of America was after at the time. Total neighbor down the street kinda car. Knew a girl who referred to just about any intermediate Ford from 72-78 as a “Highway To Heaven Hood Car”.
Are those ‘58 Lincoln Hubcaps? They look pretty cool but I’d go for some Magnums, turbines or polycasts.
The hubcaps look very much like those used on some 1967-1968 Cougars. But those are 14″ and this car should have 15″ wheels. I guess it is possible that someone changed them though. I agree that if this was my car I would change them for something that would be correct for it, especially since I have a set of them sitting here.
My parents had a two door version of this car. Mom loved it, dad hated it. I’m not sure why. It ran and drove good and it had a very nice ride. Dad was always a GM guy so I think that was most of it.
Are we sure it’s not a repaint?
I should think it would make a nice car for a neighborhood “cougar.”
At that price it would be a great daily driver and it would be fun when you get asked where you got it too be able to say…
Oshkosh by gosh!
Very nice … had it been close to a port I would buy this. I know nothing about them but I like.
After having a father special order a 77 Cougar XR7 with every option and living with it in the family all these years. Started life as a car for my mom but soon my dads daily driver. He retired years ago and retired the car and put 297K miles on it. Car NEVER had a bad day. My dad is not a brand loyalist he bought what he liked. Changed the oil every 7K miles with what ever was on sale. Oil is oil.
So as some armchair experts might say this isn’t a Cougar is sadly mistaken and obviously never had one.
Brings me to the 4 door above. My best friends parents had a 78 four door. It was quite rare and haven’t seen too many others even then. I spent my time in that car too and the 4 door version is a better all around car then the hardtop It too was a family car having every member of his family learn to drive it. It also rolled up an incredible amount of miles on the original drivetrain.
This car is a steal at the enty level price and someone would have a great car for not a lot of price. Ford was still building good cars in the mid 1970’s. Ours is proof.
The only experience I have had with one of these was that one was given to me one time.
I opened the hood and the air cleaner was where it was supposed to be.
I put a battery in and went to try to start it.
It did start and revved high from the get go.
I went to pump the accelerator pedal to bring down the idle.
I found the accelerator pedal wasn’t connected to anything.
I shut it down and went to remove the air cleaner.
I was surprised to see there was no carburator on it.
The fuel line was shooting gas directly down into the engine.
That was first and last time anything like that has ever happened to me.
