Ready To Race! 1977 Saab 99 Rally Car

When it comes to building race cars on a budget, Grassroots Motorsports has built more than a few, and apparently, back in 2008 they built this done-right rally car. The 1977 Saab 99 model, here on craigslist in Santa Cruz, California, looks ready for racing—tomorrow if need be.

The photos are mouth-watering, and the price decidedly budget-conscious. There’s no way you could build anything comparable for the asking price. It has a rally-spec Kirk roll cage, Racetech seats and harness in the stripped-out interior, a rally timer, an intercom system (pretty professional, right?), and an ATL fuel cell in the trunk, which also has the relocated battery.

The Saab has a bunch of drivetrain modifications, as well as skid plates and mud flaps for getting through the rough stages. There are tons of spares, including a head, water pump, alternator, a spill cleanup kit, and an extra set of tarmac wheels.

You can read the whole history of this car at Grassroots Motorsports extensive website.  Here’s a sample from the last update, two years ago: “Treating a Saab 99 or early 900 to a low-buck brake upgrade is simply a matter of bolting on some 1986-’87 900 Turbo ventilated rotors and calipers. The switch requires later hubs and outer CV joints, but there is no fabrication involved—just swap out the parts for improved fade resistance. The calipers even use the same pads….Wilwood makes narrow-mount calipers that bolt directly to the front hubs, as the 3.5-inch bolt spacing is a perfect fit for the Saab.”

This car was extensively campaigned on stage rallies on the East coast, “and a bunch of rally-cross fun events.”

Two years ago, the car took part in the GRM Speedfest at the Classic Motorsports Mitty, and NASA Rally Sports’ Rally Tennessee. At the time, it had 112 horsepower. The Saab has been sitting for a while, and now just needs that new, enthusiast owner.

Beautiful looking car. If only production cars were built like rally cars. Rally cars have what’s known as a roll cage to keep the passenger area from crushing in on the driver and passenger(s) in case the car rolls over, which apparently happens a lot during hard and fast rallying. While we may never drive that hard or fast, we need our cars to be built like that.
