Real Deal 1968 Dodge Coronet R/T 440

Muscle car fans, here’s one worth a closer look—a true 1968 Dodge Coronet R/T, originally equipped with a 440 V8 and backed up by matching documentation. It’s currently listed here on eBay and located in Stafford, ready for its next owner to bring it back to full power.

This is a real-deal R/T, not a clone or tribute. The VIN, fender tag, body numbers, and build sheet all line up, confirming its status as one of Dodge’s higher-performance offerings in 1968. While it was originally born with a 440 big block under the hood, that engine is no longer in place. Instead, the car now runs with a 383 V8, and there’s a video available of it idling and running. For those looking to return it to factory spec, finding a correct-era 440 shouldn’t be too difficult, and the documentation is here to back it up.

The body tells the story of a car that’s been used, bumped, and parked, but not rusted out. It’s not covered in rot, which is a plus, but the panels are beat up in places, the paint is a long way from shiny. It’ll need bodywork if you’re aiming for show quality, or you could leave it as-is for a more budget-friendly build.

Inside, things are even more worn out. The interior looks largely complete, but it’s rough, with torn seats, faded trim, and plenty of missing or damaged details. You’ll be looking at a full interior restoration unless you enjoy driving in stripped-down style.

The automatic transmission is reportedly functional, and the car appears to have most of its trim and original hardware in place, which saves time and money tracking down R/T-specific parts. The clean title and solid documentation also give this one a leg up over mystery cars or tribute builds.

Overall, this Coronet R/T represents a solid opportunity to own a genuine big-block Mopar with provenance. Whether you restore it to its original 440 glory or cruise it as-is, it’s hard to go wrong with a documented R/T coupe.

Would you hunt down a date-coded 440 to restore this Coronet, or just drive it with the 383 and enjoy the ride?

Ad copy says Stafford Springs, CT. As long as it isn’t in Onota or Pontoosuc, should be dry…

There is a ‘Ratty Musclecar’ Club in my area. This would be a great addition just as it is. They’re on FB. Not my club, but a cool concept for low buck fun.

It’s right, right now. But this being an old Mopar auction, that price could easily skyrocket.

Naming cars causes confusion. R/Ts have 440s, except not this one. 440s don’t necessarily have 440s and 500s don’t have 500s or 440s always for that matter. I think I’ll have a drink.

My first car was a 1965 Dodge Coronet 500 with a 427 wedge and a hurst 4 speed. Great fun and fast. I gave those GTO’s of the day a run for their money.
