Real Deal Head Turner: 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Chevrolet joined the mid-size muscle car scene in 1965 with a limited production of the Chevelle Malibu, the SS 396. The Bow-Tie folks dived in all the way by making the car a series of its own the next year. GM’s intermediates were treated to a redesign in 1968 and buyers responded by scooping up 57,595 copies of the SS (96% were Sport Coupes like this red beauty). This real-deal Super Sport has lots of new parts and performance upgrades, making it more than a fitting driver. Located east of Everett, Washington, this rubber burner is available for $42,999 here on craigslist. A nod goes to Barn Finder “Scott” for this great tip.

We don’t know how long the seller has owned this Chevy, but it’s clear someone has poured time and money into this fine machine in its 57 years. We’re told this SS is legit and not one of the many clones out there. The seller is unsure if the 396 cubic inch V8 is numbers matching, but it’s period-correct and rebuilt, at a minimum. This Chevelle should be hotter than when it was new with ceramic headers, a stainless-steel exhaust, and a Holley carburetor and ignition. This set-up is paired with a TH-400 automatic transmission.

The interior is new and OEM with everything important having been replaced. The red paint (and black trim?) was redone about a decade ago and looks great with no rust. But the chrome bumpers were replaced and have a nice shine.

We don’t know how busy this Chevy has been over the years as only a placeholder was used for the odometer reading. The seller seems to be a flexible sort as cryptocurrency will be accepted and he/she is not opposed to providing delivery. As the seller goes no further than calling this Chevelle a driver, is it properly priced?

Red Devil. Which for the record is also one of the finest lures ever. Especially for pike 🐟 🎣

I’m 78 & I’ve always had a good assortment of Eppinger Red Devil spoons of various-weights in my tackle box. Grandpa & Dad swore by them. Indeed, they are Northern Pike killers!……true story.
Authentic examples are easily detected, as they’re of thicker/heavier construction than any copied knock-offs!
As well, originals always had a “devil’s head” stamped on the red & white top surface. Accept NO substitutes!

        Utesman.. you said it. 👍🤝
Good call on the various weighted lures. A heavy one would cast a country mile, and cover a lot of ground. Great for fishing off the dock or shore.
I hope you catch a nice fish this season. 🎣

This car looks very well sorted with EFI, upgraded electric fan cooling, upgraded suspension, exhaust, PS, PDB and great cosmetics it certainly looks ready to drive anywhere. The only thing I’d change is to an overdrive automatic. The price seems pretty reasonable as it costs that much just to find a solid drivable, restorable car anymore.

Something fishy going on up there… GM built some well engineered and good looking cars in that period. This beauty sums up the pure fun going on then and does a great job of representing the breed.

bobhess.. been watching some of those great fishing shows on YouTube. So many good ones lol. Northern Pike can get pretty big and are very good tablefare 🍽 🐟
Bony though, and tricky at least for me to fillet out. 🔪

Pulled some really tasty fish out of the mouth of the Columbia river in Oregon. Great eating.
