Rebuilt V8 Project: 1964 Chevrolet Impala

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

In 1964, the full-size Chevrolets were in their last styling iteration of the 1961-64 generation. The cars were bulkier and squared off compared to the popular 1963 versions. Chevy built more than 442,000 copies of the Impala Sport Coupe, excluding the sportier SS models. This one has a freshly rebuilt engine but needs some cosmetic refreshing. Located in Shoreham, New York, this unfinished project is available here on craigslist for $9,500. A tip brought to us by Barn Finder “Zen.”

Before we go further, we apologize for the blurry photos. That’s the best the seller could come up with for a car whose asking price is “firm.” They show us a vehicle with weak paint and maybe worn carpeting, but the images aren’t crisp enough to discuss all of the other highs and lows. Rust is mentioned, but patched floors suggest there was some there before.

The mileage is enough (95,000) for the 283 cubic inch V8 to have been redone. We’re told that everything under the hood is new, and we assume that includes the automatic transmission (2-speed Powerglide?). The 4-barrel carburetor may be an upgrade, as we assume the 283s all came with 2-barrels. The tires and part of the brakes (unfinished) are new.

This Chevy currently runs off a gas can because the fuel tank is out of the car and waiting to go back in. Any trim that appears to be missing is still hanging around. As a plus, the seller has some spare fenders, trunk lid, and hood for sale for $2,000 extra, which implies they may be needed on this Impala. Based on the car’s presentation, would you pull the trigger at the seller’s price point?

Looks like after market under dash A/C but no compressor under the hood. It looks like the glove box door is missing.

I was surprised to see that 1957 Oldsmobile air cleaner. Kind of cool. My Dad’s boss bought a new one of these and he and my Dad took it to see the Indy 500. About a 2 hour drive from home. Always thought that they were cool looking.
