This 1973 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Convertible demonstrates that there are still great classics squirreled away in garages, awaiting liberation by passionate enthusiasts. It spent most of its life as part of the same family, although the last twelve years saw it hidden away in a garage. The seller purchased the car four years ago and carefully restored it to a turnkey mechanical state. The time has come for the Cougar to find a new home, and I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Curvette for spotting it listed here on eBay in Severn, Maryland. The seller set their BIN at $14,300 with the option to make an offer.

Mercury produced its Second Generation Cougar range between 1971 and 1973. It continued utilizing Ford’s Mustang underpinnings, although the appearance became more distinctive to differentiate the Cougar from its cousin. The first owner ordered this final-year XR-7 Convertible in Yellow with a White power top. It remained part of the same family until approximately four years ago, after being stored for years. Rust can be a problem with these classics, but the first owner’s decision to hand the Cougar to the fine folks at Ziebart means that the only issue requiring attention is a small section at the rear of the trunk pan. The rest of the car is solid. The Convertible is presentable, although its paint and panel imperfections make it a prime candidate for restoration. The seller believes that the top is relatively new and works as it should, with no issues. Some trim pieces require a trip to the platers if the buyer plans a restoration, but the glass is clear.

Powering this Cougar is the entry-level 351ci V8, which Mercury claimed produced 168hp and 266 ft/lbs of torque. A three-speed automatic transmission handles shifting duties, while power assistance for the steering and brakes accentuates the Cougar’s luxurious leanings. The seller states that they commenced the mechanical revival of this classic four years ago, and it appears that they were pretty thorough. The process included replacing the filters, belts, hoses, flushing and replacing the fluids, flushing the fuel system, and rebuilding the carburetor. They installed a new aluminum radiator and a Petronix ignition system. The brakes and suspension received similar attention, including new springs, shocks, bushings, tie rod ends, and tires. The only identified fault is a slight “tick” in the engine that doesn’t impact the car’s performance. It runs and drives well, and appears to be a turnkey proposition.

Apart from a slight crack in the dashpad, there isn’t much to criticize about this Cougar’s interior. The lack of wear and significant marks on the White vinyl trim hints at a life where the owners have treated the car respectfully. The carpet is slightly dirty under the driver’s feet, but the issue isn’t bad enough to justify replacement. The plastic is in good order, and there are no aftermarket additions. The seller confirms that the air conditioning and clock are inoperative, but that the AM/FM radio and other features work as they should.

This 1973 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Convertible isn’t perfect, but it is a turnkey proposition that someone can enjoy immediately. The first owner’s decision to rust-proof this classic has left it in rock-solid condition, making it a prime candidate for a cosmetic restoration. It has only generated moderate interest since hitting the market, but do you see enough potential in this Mercury to pursue it further?

Put the stock mercury wheels or magnum 500’s on it, maintain and drive it. Good price for some convertible fun.

The nose design on these were just so unappealing. The rest of the car had nice lines tho.

Two mistakes may have been made here: If the seat covers are original, they would be leather inserts. And, the stock transmissions for all ’73’s were FMX.
Also, those are not the original wheels. Would have been steelies with hubcaps

Love a cougar in yellow with a solid trunk, especially when the top comes down.
