Reef Blue: 1993 Ford Mustang LX 5.0

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1993 Ford Mustang LX appears to wear a rare factory color known as Reef Blue, one of the prettier colors you could order your Fox Body ‘Stang with in 1993. The seller doesn’t make any mention of the paint, but I’m fairly certain the Mustang faithful would quickly identify this clean hatchback as extra desirable for its bright blue paint job. The car is, overall, a survivor, with some basic mechanical needs stemming from its extended stay in storage. Find the Mustang here on eBay with bidding over $7K and no reserve.

The seller, a wholesaler, describes the Mustang as decent, but not perfect. Mileage is low, at just 53,757, and it has apparently been stored in a garage for a number of years. This has helped keep the body in good shape, with no problematic rust popping up despite residing near Philadelphia. The hatchback body may not be as desirable as its notchback sibling, but when they are in stock condition like this one is – free of the factory body kid – the rear hatch doesn’t bother me as much. The exhaust doesn’t appear to have been modified, a rarity in Fox Bodies.

The interior remains in good shape, and the door map pockets don’t even appear to be exhibiting too much sag. The automatic transmission may be a buzzkill, but the seller does note it has been rebuilt in October 2019, and the paperwork will come with the sale. The bucket seats show relatively modest signs of use, and the mismatched floor mat is the biggest distraction inside. No details are offered about the interior features, such as whether the A/C still works, but it honestly looks clean enough that I’d be shocked if it didn’t.

The engine bay is a touch dingier than I was expecting, but the seller does disclose that the Mustang will need some refreshing. Right off the bat, he notes the tires are dry-rotted and that brake system components may need to be replaced. Overall, though, these are small issues relative to the prospect of owning a stock Fox Body in a rare color with 5.0L V8 power on board. I’d love it even more if it was a standard shift, but there’s still an awful lot to like here – including the potential to make some modest improvements and own a nicely appreciating modern classic.

Ah yes, the epitome of 90’s car colors. The next owner’s first order of business should be a phone call to Tremec.

In the 2nd paragraph I believe you meant to write “kit”
: “is – free of the factory body kid – the rear hatch doesn’t bother me as much.”

But then again we know how destructive “kid” can be with cars like this.

My first car back in high school was an ‘82 Capri hatchback. We fit multiple kids back there on many occasions. Didn’t bother me one bit.

Jeff, you made me laugh. The notchback is just plain ugly. I will always prefer the fastback, plus it comes with far greater utility. And Eric was right, I would call Tremec (or someone!) to get this swapped over to a 5 speed as soon as possible. This one seems like it would make a great driver.

Looks like a clean Mustang and the exterior is an attractive color. Like Skorzeny, I prefer the fastback style to the coupe; it just looks better to me. It seems to have been cared for; the paint looks good and the interior, while boringly gray, looks like it’s in good shape. The auto trans may not appeal to everyone but I don’t mind it. I’d give this one a serious look if I was in the market for a Fox body Mustang. I think the pros outweigh the cons and the new owner does have the option of modifying it to his taste.

    Trans rebuild at 53k?

If the overdrive trans is based on a C4 & there was “spirited” driving, maybe. At least the wipers aren’t ridiculously long & mismatched like they are on today’s dumb vehicles.
Serpentine belt may have some advantages, but if it breaks, you’re stuck if u can’t replace it on the side of the road. I prefer old fashioned belts. On a ’60s nova with with strait 6 & PS, i noticed driving in a blizzard years ago, the voltmeter barely showed the battery was charging.
I did get home & next day i lifted the hood & the alternator belt was GONE! lol
The alternator had 2 pulleys & the remaining PS belt was still spinning the alternator, but slower since it contacted a smaller area of the pulley.
Headlites are cloudy here, but at least different aftmkt ones are inexpensive on ebay.
Too bad MULTI pt fuel injection intake, etc. takes up a lot of space under the hood.

My friend had an identical looking Mustang, which he bought when it was a year old. He loved it, but lost it when his entire subdivision burned to the ground a few years ago.

Looks like some Reef Blue overspray on that passenger side tailpipe perhaps?

Bob O, good eye, I believe you are correct. REEF BLUE just not hitting me. The other blues of the era were nicer (excluding the powder blue on the Ford Tempos back then!

Seemingly nice car on MOST levels. The no manual kills the deal for me.

Additionally the engine compartment looks like it was detailed by the guy who did the make-up for all the ghost pirates of Pirates of the Caribbean !!!

Yikes! Crusty and cracked are the first 2 words that come to mind. Not sure how the rest of the car can look this good and the engine compartment spending time on the bottom of the ocean,…I mean REEF ! UGH!

Owner/seller should have spent some time AND/OR some money with a good detailer before you listed this one.

Pretty nice Fox Body. I always liked this color. A few thousand spent on repairs and this would be a very nice car, one that would appreciate in value. The first thing I would do (after the mandatory safety-related repairs) is to replace those headlights– an inexpensive upgrade.

Contact the Seller and ask him/her what they want for the car. If they are not on another Planet in terms of price, buy it, give it what it needs, and enjoy.
