This 1964 Chevrolet Bel Air sedan is described as a dependable, driver-quality classic that’s been extensively updated for long-distance cruising. Fresh paint, a rebuilt inline-six, a TH350 automatic, and a host of modern upgrades make it a solid highway car that’s “set up” for a V8 swap if desired. Listed here on craigslist in the Alton area, the seller claims it can run 75–80 mph “all day long,” whether in 100-degree heat or freezing winter weather. Thanks for the tip Tony Primo!

The Bel Air retains its 230-cubic-inch straight-six, which was rebuilt in 2023, along with a TH350 transmission fitted with a mild converter and shift kit. While not a powerhouse, the seller emphasizes that this Chevy has been built for reliability rather than drag-strip performance, making it an excellent family cruiser. A Petronix Ignitor II electronic ignition and coil, internally regulated Powermaster 100-amp alternator, and fresh fuel system (tank, sender, lines, and rebuilt carburetor) all contribute to worry-free driving.

Suspension and steering have been upgraded with CPP tubular front suspension, all-new steering linkage, and newer springs and shocks. The braking system has also been improved with a CPP power front disc brake swap, ensuring modern stopping power. Cooling is handled by an aluminum radiator, and a new 21-circuit Ron Francis harness means the entire car has been rewired for modern reliability.

Other driveline updates include a poly/billet carrier bearing swap, new Spicer U-joints, and a newer Flowmaster exhaust system that’s described as “unique-sounding but quiet on the highway.” The car rides on newer American Racing Torque Thrust wheels wrapped in brand-new BFGoodrich Radial T/As, giving it a period-correct look with better handling characteristics.

The body has received fresh paint as of April, though the seller stresses it’s not a show-quality finish—this is meant to be driven. Trunk and floor pans are said to be solid, making it a strong candidate for long-term enjoyment. The interior remains mostly original but functional, now fitted with front shoulder 3-point seatbelts for safety. A Bluetooth-equipped stereo has also been installed, making this an ideal weekend cruiser for family outings or road trips.

The seller notes the Bel Air has already proven itself on multiple long-distance drives, including four trips to the Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky, and frequent runs to the Magic Dragon Car Show at the Lake of the Ozarks. Whether you leave it as a reliable six-cylinder cruiser or drop in a V8 for extra power, this Bel Air appears ready for many more miles. Would you keep it as-is or build it into a more traditional V8-powered hot rod?

But does it have air conditioning?
I see this calling for a vintage air setup and some interior work, other than that I would drive the wheels off it.
Very nice. I like those wheels and had a set once. I’d prefer a stick, but this is perfect for going to car shows…
Lovely looking car. My aunt and uncle had a 64 Impala back in the day. The only thing I’m not a fan of are the aftermarket gauges underneath the dash.
