Restomod Hot Rod: 1977 Ford Mustang II Mach 1

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Now, I despite seller hyperbole as much as the next guy, but when the seller of this 1977 Ford Mustang II says it’s likely one of the finest examples left, I’m not inclined to disagreeing. It really does look that good, with mostly original paint and some very choice mods that make it a classy restomod you can use every day. There’s been some very real money spent on this Mustang II to address many of the original complaints about this unloved model, and it comes from two of the driest environments in the U.S., ensuring rust won’t be an issue. Find the upgraded pony car here on eBay with bidding at $10,600 and the reserve unmet.

Seriously, look at that stance: if the Mustang II looked this good out of the gate, would it have had as many haters as it did when it was introduced? Doubtful, but it also helps this example has been upgraded with the sort of drivetrain that would make anyone forget about their past muscle car loves. The seller notes that the Mustang features a “…fully built Ford Racing 302 CID V-8 roller engine with custom parts and more,” paired to a “…fully built C4 three-speed automatic transmission with special parts and 3.54 gearing .” Numerous other mechanical upgrades have clearly been made, including rebuilt suspension and staggered wheels and tires.

The interior remains in mostly stock condition with some minor tweaks, but also benefits from fresh upholstery on the front seats and replacement carpet. Incredibly, the door panels are original, and they look to be in incredible condition. The same goes for the dash, which remains uncracked and covers a handsome instrument binnacle with an aftermarket tachometer added (there’s a second Autometer tach installed on the hood as well). The Mach 1 steering wheel looks great, but the seller notes the horn is inoperable. The Mustang retains a factory AM/FM radio and floor mounted shifter.

The previous owner proceeded with a no-expense spared build of the drivetrain, featuring a 302 V8 roller engine with forged internals. Aluminum heads, upgraded camshaft, COMP roller rockers, MSD distributor, and a Holley 1850 carburetor round out just some of the improvements, and the overall tidiness of the engine bay suggests the previous owner was mildly obsessed with attention to detail. Despite the emphasis on performance upgrades, the Mustang retains power steering and power brakes. Overall, this build isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for one of the best Mustang IIs we’ve seen in a while, this example certainly looks like a high-quality build.

Generally I wouldn’t give this thing a second glance but the way it’s been redone it’d be a blast to drive.

My kind of car. Not a fan of the wheels (better looking ones out there) but it looks put together properly and you know it will move down the road at a pretty good rate. Looks like fun to me.

It’s nice looking, but the attention to details is looks to be only skin deep. The undercarriage and seats look horrible, but everything visible to the casual passerby at a car show looks otherwise. That’s all that matters to many.

The engine is nothing special, everyone with half a brain looking to build economical power from a 302 Ford for the last 25 years has started with a roller block as a core. It’s the cheapest way to do so. The thing to look for if someone was trying to build serious horsepower is the mention of which stroker kit and aftermarket heads they used. If neither of those is on the list, it’s a budget rebuild, especially when you add in a Holley 1850 carb. The wheels are a nice touch, it gives the car a retro 1980’s vibe. It’s not a bad car, if the price is right, for someone wanting to go to the local coffee and cars. However, when looking at the sellers completed listings, based on their sell through rate, it suggests the reserve is going to be too high.

Remove the lipstick and it is still a Pinto underneath.

Looks nicer than the one I drove in HS.

Side note: my brother and I have an ongoing $10/listing bet. We each chose a commenter. If your commenter comments on a posting and the others does not, you win $10. If both commenters post a comment the dumbest comment gets the win. My guy/dolt posted on this one as he does on almost every listing. Keep posting your comments it’s making me a lot of money! lol

Well look at that, a Mustang II that looks like it means business!
It looks like it came straight out of Hot Rod magazine in the early eighties, good stuff.

Recall wishing that Mustang IIs came from the factory with similar powertrains/mods. Also recalling the Baldwin/Motion Vegas…..
