Restored, Then Stored: 1950 MG TD

The previous owner of this 1950 MG TD treated it to a full, frame-off restoration around 20-years-ago. It saw limited use over the following 2-years and then went into storage for 18-years. It is now back on the road and looking for a new owner to appreciate the fruits of someone else’s hard work. If a classic British sports car sits high on your “must-have” list, then you will find the MG located in Las Vegas, Nevada, and listed for sale here on eBay. At the time of writing, bidding has reached $8,360, and the reserve has been met. It seems that the new owner is just around the corner.

The previous owner had done all of the hard work on the MG, and it has only recently emerged from storage after he sadly passed away. It would appear as though the restoration work was pretty thorough, and when you combine this factor with the dry Nevada climate, the TD is said to be rust-free. However, that doesn’t mean that is perfect. For all of this hard work, the paint is showing noticeable deterioration in some areas. This has manifested in cracking and spider-webs. The car remains very presentable, and it looks like the majority of the issues aren’t really visible from about 20′ away. Still, if perfection is the ultimate goal, then a repaint might be on the cards at some point. At the same time that the restoration was completed, the MG received a new top and side curtains. These remain in great condition, although the rear window has become quite cloudy. However, replacing this won’t be a huge job. One aspect of the car that has really benefitted from the dry climate is the exterior trim and chrome. It presents beautifully and is probably as good today as it was when the restoration was originally performed.

One area where the next owner won’t have to spend much money will be on the interior. The cream upholstery would have to rate as close to perfect, with no signs of a single mark, split, or tear anywhere. In fact, there doesn’t even appear to be any stretching on the seats. The dash presents beautifully, and the markings and glass on the gauges look clean and crisp. Once again, it looks great, but it isn’t perfect. A close look reveals a crack in the rim of the steering wheel. The next owner could choose to either leave it as it is, have the wheel restored, or source a replacement. It would probably be worth investigating restoration because a search of the internet shows that good replacements generally start at around the $300 mark.

After sitting for close to a couple of decades, the MG needed a bit of work before it was able to fire into life once again. This included a clean and flush of the fuel system, rebuilds for both the fuel pump and carburetors, a rebuild of the brakes, a clean and flush of the cooling system, and installation of a fresh battery. The little 1,250cc 4-cylinder engine has now kicked back into life and is in good health. It isn’t clear just how many miles the MG has covered because the owner states that the odometer shows only 2,190 miles. What he believes is that the odometer may have been reset during the restoration, and the odometer reading could be accurate for how many miles the car has actually accumulated since everything was rebuilt. He does say is that the MG now drives beautifully, but with the tires being quite old, he suggests that they should be replaced before any serious driving is undertaken.

This MG TD is a great little car that is ready to be driven and enjoyed immediately. The deterioration in the paint is disappointing because the rest of the car is just so good. Getting this rectified is not something that would need to be done immediately, but a repaint would transform the MG into something really special. Given the condition of the rest of the vehicle, a repaint could push the potential value of this little car to up around the $30,000 mark. In all honesty, even if the bidding on the vehicle was to eventually double, it would still seem to rate as a pretty decent buy.

I took my drivers test in one just like this, except it was blue.

When I was 11 or 12 I saw one of these cars for the first time and fell in love with it. I really wanted to buy it or one similar to it.
I expanded my paper route, did jobs for neighbors as in mowing lawns, painting fences, whatever I could do and saved every dime I could. I road a bus downtown to check the dealership, just to see if there was a similar car on the lot.
Unfortunately I was also growing taller, at 16 I was 6’5″. When I had saved enough and had a drivers license I went to buy the car of my dreams.

I could not get in it. It was just too small, I tried every which way, but I could not sit in the drivers seat except sideways with my feet on the ground. Absolutely discouraging and I was heart broken.
I still love the little thing, but have had to rely on photos.

I had one of these (in Green & tan) several years ago.
&, like this example, it was in near perfect mechanical condition, had a rust-free & perfectly straight body, but was suffering from some paint degradation.
This actually made the car somewhat more enjoyable, as I was never worried about ruining a perfect paint job, & so I drove that car everywhere! It was great fun!
I’d recommend that the new owner of this very nice TD get some estimates for a new paint job, & perhaps an estimate for just a selective touch-up of the areas where the paint cracking and chipping are the worst.
Then just mount a new set of tires & enjoy driving it as it is for a few years! :-)

A dream car for so many. But you have to be short to drive them.

True, Bob. We had a ’53 identical to this one and at 5’6″ I was glad I wasn’t 5’8″. 5′ wife loved it though. They are slow but fun. A different rear gear ratio does wonders for real world roads. Nice looking car.

It will take more than new paint to pull $30,000 for a TD.

My wife and I bought this car and had it shipped to us in central Georgia. The body is straight and the chrome is excellent.
The downsides are as follows: The exhaust was from a later car and I have replaced that with a stainless system. The engine was FULL of rust And sediment and I had to disassemble it to clear out all the coolant passages. I had the radiator professionally cleaned. I have disassembled everything that was bolted onto the engine, cleaned and reassembled with new parts. I have a new wiring loom which will go in once the car is repainted.
The upholstery is in remarkable shape and appears to have been redone some time ago. The foam padding has had to be replaced as it deteriorated.
The car appears to have been parked outside in Las Vegas for some time as the paint on the right hand side is flaking off. I will repaint the car MG maroon with black fenders.
    Wish me luck!
