Retired Workhorse: 1954 Dodge Power Wagon

Another day, another former firefighting apparatus on eBay. To be fair, however, this is a wicked Dodge Power Wagon, still wearing its original livery with a nice even coating of aged paint. The seller seems to be confusing the standard inline-six with a V-shaped design, and is otherwise limited with details about the mechanical health of the Power Wagon. It’s safe to say it still looks intimidating, even standing still. Find it here on eBay with bidding over $18K and the reserve unmet.

The Power Wagon was a pioneer in many ways, becoming one of the earlier mass-produced 4×4 pickups for civilian use. Although used frequently for military and defense applications, the Power Wagon could also be found plowing the town’s roads or being put to work at the local farm. And, in some cases, it went into use as a fire department’s trusty steed. I dig the old-school tailgate still attached and with nicely aged paint.

The cab is quite nice as well, but many of the former town firefighting rigs we see share this quality. Since they likely weren’t used on a daily basis, the interiors don’t bear the scars of daily use. The painted dash, bench seat and door panels are all in excellent condition. The mileage is noted at 20,063; while the town vehicles tend to be lower mileage examples, the seller will need to provide some validation of the low mileage claim.

I’m not sure why the seller felt the need to repeat over and over this is a V6-equipped truck, but more important to the conversation would be a discussion about recent maintenance or any sort of mechanical history. Of course, those records may have been lost when a municipal owner sold the Power Wagon, so you may just have to accept what you see in pictures. What we can see looks good, and it’s certainly not stopping bidders from raising their hands.

Admittedly know absolute nothing about these as a self professed GM guy.. But what a gnarly looking truck. If that was coming up hot in my rear view I’d have a flashback to a Stephen King movie and promptly get the F out of the way.

This is a textbook example of what the word “patina” used to mean, before it started being used on vehicles that look like they came out of a lake.

Awesome looking truck, would love to have it but bidding is already more than I would pay. Good luck to the next owner.

Probably the best looking example of a Power Wagon I’ve ever seen, would love to have this one!

Gotta love the old Power Wagons. She won’t break any speed records but, you can use that huge winch to pull a house over.
The odometer reading may be right, but you have to think about how these pieces of fire fighting equipment can be running all day in pump gear at a big fire. She could have some serious engine hours.
    I REALLY LIKE IT!

Neat old truck. I used to have a ’41 Ford cabover ex-firetruck that I used to drive to actual fires expressly for the purpose of picking up girls. Sounds weird but 55 years ago it worked like a charm.

Jeff…keep the old fire trucks coming!.

When I was a little kid I had a neighbor up the hill who had an old open cab pumper might have been a hook and ladder. Theres a pix if me sitting in the cab with theowner at about age 6.

Love reading about these. I live in a wildfire prone area and I’m always thinking I should pick one up for fire protection but blanche at the price….

Kinda sad. Not sure who’s selling this on eBay, (flipper?) but I’ve owned 2 retired old trucks from different fire departments. Both in great shape with low mileage. I picked up both of them CHEAP. Just gotta check in with fire departments and ask around. Cheaper one’s are out there to be had. WAY cheaper.

Love this truck. After years of rural firefighting my self we would have loved to had one of these. Pretty sure that’s the same flathead straight six I have in my 1945 Dodge 1/2 ton blackout.
