RHD Import! 1983 Land Rover 110 County

If the Olympics of Dull, naming a vehicle “110” after its wheelbase in inches probably takes the gold medal. Joke about the Land Rover 110 at your own peril, though, lest a flying spanner crack your skull from out of nowhere. These rugged off-road appliances have led to more happy endings in life-and-death situations than most vehicles that encourage adventures far from civilization. With a repainted body and undercarriage, this 1983 Land Rover 110 County in Maple Plain, Minnesota “runs excellent,” and the right-hand-drive import can be yours for $28,900 via Buy It Now here on eBay.

A five-speed manual gearbox backs up the sturdy inline four-cylinder, and while driving a stick-shift RHD may seem daunting, I’ve done it many times in a variety of countries, and it becomes “automatic” (pun intended) almost immediately. What may be more challenging is the limited sight-line created by driving a RHD vehicle on the right side of American roads, most notably on tight right-hand corners. Your ability to react to someone backing out of a driveway into your path is greatly reduced.

The “County” edition included “plusher trim,” according to Landrover, and the full-width black grille and fender flares peg this as a later 1983 model with coil springs and a slightly wider track. Interestingly, the sliding windows are normally seen on early 1983 units, according to Wikipedia. We see Land Rover as a luxury brand today, but that fact that this 110 marked the first year of (optional) power steering underscores the 110’s utilitarian roots.

Since World War II, Land Rovers drew power from an inline four-cylinder engine, and while this generation lost the classic inset grille to make room for a Rover-sourced 3.5L V8, this County soldiers on with the workhorse I4. Hardly bristling with performance, the 2.5L petrol four would score well on a list of “top ten engines to continue running long enough to get you back to civilization.”

Land Rover states the County’s cargo area accommodates six kegs of London Pride, or three dead stags. That posh County interior is truly top-shelf; hardly any painted metal in sight. At one time, Land Rover employed rows of elderly Brits crocheting seat covers all day in between sips of Earl Grey. Note:  some details in this paragraph may be complete balderdash. The seller claims this aluminum-bodied 110 maintains highway speeds and features almost-new tires and other recently-replaced parts. Would you trust this 40 year-old SUV to return you safely from the wilderness?

Awesome looking Land Rover. I find this way more attractive than what’s being offered by Land Rover today. Given its condition, I’d be willing to pay close to the asking price, for me around $25,000.

Great solid 110, sold it recently to a couple in WA. Should be motoring about there now.

I’m on my 3rd Jeep and I wish I had never sold my Land Rover. This was (is) a good one and the new owner will love it. Listing my current Jeep to buy another Land Rover ASAP.
