Rough But Worthy: 1976 Ford Bronco

This 1976 Ford Bronco is certainly a project, but based on the seller’s description, it seems worthy of further restoration – especially since you can still drive it as improvements are made. Even better, it’s listed at no reserve with bidding at a reasonable $8,900 at the moment, which should leave some room in the budget to make the improvements the seller recommends. Overall, some of the hard work has already been done, including the front floor pans and the rear quarter panels being replaced, and the seller has refreshed the stock 302. Find it here on eBay with just over a day left and located in Colorado.

The Bronco obviously will need a paint job at some point, but the overall roughshod appearance works at the moment and I wouldn’t feel pressure to strip it down and repaint in the short-term. The seller claims the only major rust is in the passenger side door, and that the  door frames and the frame itself are both solid. If this has been a Colorado truck since new, it would likely explain why it has survived better than some of the other Broncos we’ve featured on Barn Finds. The seller notes he does have a spare tire carrier and an extra driver’s side door that will be included in the sale. The hardtop and glass look to be fine shape.

The seller had plans to swap in a 351, but instead decided to pull the 302 and give it a going-over, repainting the block and replacing the timing chain and all gaskets with new components. He does not know if the engine is original, but I wouldn’t be too worried about it on a truck like this, as the smartest path (to me, anyhow) is to finish up the bodywork and give it a decent respray. The engine may not be the highest performance mill you can drop into a Bronco, and a 351 may hold some appeal for some buyers – but for the time being, this is a reliable mill that’s already had some of the heavy lifting done maintenance-wise.

The interior is another area I’d want to restore, likely a “Phase 2” project once the bodywork is done. he front seats are likely pretty torn up, and they don’t match the white vinyl rear bench. The seller notes he is including a new white seat cover for the rear bench, and I personally love the idea of a red Bronco with front buckets covered in matching white vinyl. The door panels look like they could also stand a do-over, but the seller’s list of outstanding issues put some items higher on the list of priorities than a mint interior. The transmission shifts roughly, the gas tank filler hose leaks, the ignition switch is damaged – and on and on. Still, it’s cheap for a runner, and the issues are manageable.

Scruffy, but all the pieces are there and relatively straight. If the price doesn’t go up any more it will make a good project.

And ‘76 is a good year to start a build with.

I like these better than the customized ones. (Wrong choices, higher purchase price).
I’d B able to keep/restore the steering wheel, seats, etc. Pull the C-4 (build up for my other, in case my 22 y/o doesn’t want the 5 speed in it/as is) & put in an AOD in this one, discs up frnt, etc. The price must stay below nother 1900 additional tho.
