Running Drop-Top Project: 1968 Ford Mustang

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

After selling a record 1.3 million Mustangs in 1964-66, Ford treated the pony car to a restyle on the same platform in 1967. As a result, few changes were made to the 1968 editions, like the seller’s convertible which was one of 22,000 assembled that year. This is a running V8 project where a lot of the heavy lifting may have already been done. Located in Mesquite, Texas, this ‘Stang is available here on eBay where you’ll have to break $9,000 to bust through the seller’s reserve.

The most visible change to the 1968 Mustang was the addition of side marker lights as newly required by law. The seller’s car no longer wears them, removed no doubt in prepping the body for a new coat of paint. We’re not sure what repairs – if any – were needed and the seller indicates that the undercarriage is quite solid. The black interior looks tidy though there is no radio where one originally resided. The convertible top needs changing, and it is power-operated.

A good-running, numbers-matching 289 cubic inch V8 can be found under the hood. The VIN decodes as having been built with a 2-barrel carburetor, making it the most fuel-efficient Mustang you could buy except for one with a six-cylinder engine. We’re told that the vehicle has a new gas tank, carb, and exhaust with more recent tires.

As an incentive, the seller (likely a dealer) says that free shipping will be provided as part of the sale. Within reasons, of course, such as inside the 48 contiguous states or to port facilities for overseas buyers. While the sale is bound by a reserve, the seller also says if you make a fair offer, the deal will be done. If you’ve been looking for a first-gen Mustang to restore, does this one fit your requirements?

Looks nice, but there are no pictures with the top up. There is also some rust in the trunk area that it looks like was just covered with paint.

I still remember the commercial for these cars. Someone sang the song “Mustang, Mustang 68”, funny how things like that will stick in your mind somewhere. Those commercial jingles are designed to get and keep our attention and that one certainly did for me. A convertible Mustang of early vintage would be a nice enough car for cars and coffee, but I just can’t see myself riding around town in one. Now I’m sure there are plenty of folks that would feel right at home in this car, it’s just not me.

Everytime i see a “car” commercial today, i immediately switch to another channel. They all look the same & not one TWO door to be seen, let alone the(mentioning of a) low(er) price(than last year).

I don’t remember ever seeing a final suggested retail price on any car commercials today. I do see the lease (Rent) prices, which blows my mind that someone is willing to pay those monthly payments and at the end of the lease term, have nothing to show for their money. As far as the shapes of new cars, today isnt as bad as the early 2000’s where almost everything looked the same and just a hand full of colors. No more two tones or stripes, no chrome, nd sticker emblems. Guess that’s why I own 8 cars and trucks (but who’s counting) and none newer than 1997. Then there is my opinion on cycles. Anyway…at least newer cars have some more character so they stand apart more, but who can afford a mortgage payment for 7 years on a new car…or want to? Not me.

Poncho, you can see the price of a pinto on youtube at the end of/search for …
Ford Pinto Commercials From 1971! LOL!

These below mention the Mavericks low price too …
Meet the 1970 Ford Maverick $1995
        &
        1970 Ford Maverick Grabber commercial

This ’69 dodge charger commercial mentions lowER price
        1969 Dodge Charger Television Commercial
& imagine today’s young women going nuts over the current 4 door charger when it was introduced, like in the commercial below for a ’69.. Yeah right.
Heck they would not even NOTICE a ’69 today, because even crossing the street, they have their eyes down, glued to their smart phone all the time.
        Watch …
        Dodge Charger 500 Commercial (1970)
on youtube, which probably would be politically incorrect as well today.

Poncho, actually in 2007 you could get a lot more exterior colors(14 of them – 4 shades of blue!) on a Toyota Yaris than the last year it was offered in the USA(maybe 4 or 5 colors – & just 1 blue or red in 2018)!

Although the seller has a 100% feedback, I’m still suspect of this car. And I don’t understand why you would remove radio & all below it leaving a huge empty area. That in itself, along with the required new ragtop, will require a lot of wiring work. Just needs a thorough in-depth “looksy” be4 purchase.
