Rust-Free 4×4: 1966 International Scout 800

I think that it’s a pretty safe bet to say that we all like Scouts, or most of us do. The rust issue always comes up when they’re shown, but how about a rust-free 1966 International Scout 800? This one is not cheap, showing up on eBay with a current bid price of $11,400 which is past Hagerty’s #3 good value! It’s located in beautiful Golden, Colorado. Thanks to Matt W. for sending in this hauntingly-desirable Scout!

The first thing that catches our collective eye, I’m assuming, is that why is this Scout in primer? Was it a quickie patch-up-and-flip sort of thing? No, this truck has no rust and it has never had rust, originally being from Fruita, Colorado in the desert. This is actually the original color but with “20% flattener to take the sheen out as it kept it looking old and classic because I wasn’t doing a complete restoration and wanted it to blend with the aged chrome, emblems, interior and such.” Unlike most things, I’m on the fence about the flat paint. I think I’m leaning more towards wishing that it would have been painted to its original sheen, but I like it this look, too.

What a great looking Scout, flat paint or not! The seller says that this is the first classic vehicle that he and his wife bought when they started making real money six years ago but they’re selling it because it just sits, not being able to take their family of four anywhere since it’s only a two-seater. Hey, I wonder if a pair of BRAT seats… no… never mind. For such a rugged 4×4 that can probably go anywhere, it sure is, cough.. cute. The profile is like watching puppy videos, isn’t it? Ok, maybe not, but it’s such a fun body style and the condition is amazing on this thing.

There are no engine photos which is surprising given how many photos the seller has provided. I’m sure that they’ll send one to any serious bidders. But, with this truck most likely going for over Hagerty’s $13,300 #2 excellent value, they can’t exactly be worried about having to bend over backward to sell it. It has I-H’s 196 cubic-inch inline-four with around 110 hp and reportedly it starts every time and runs great. The interior is original other than the seats which have been redone in the plaid fabric shown in the photos. Cool, I really like that look but I had pants like that in the mid-70s so you can’t trust my judgment. Check out the photos and let us know if you like the flat paint to match the original door jamb finish or if you would have gone with a regular sheen? And, what will this Scout sell for? For the record, Hagerty is at $18,500 for a #1 concours example. This one isn’t concours but values are all over the place these days.

There is no ”Frutopia” in Colorado, is “Fruita”, and it is just outside of Grand Junction, in what we in Denver Metro call “Utah light”, so yes, it is the desert.

Another nice write up Scotty. If you happen to have a photo of you in them pants/ seat covers in the 1970’s, I bet you would get close to the top of the thumbs up record.

Thanks for reminding me of those pants, in 3 different colors in my case. And, if there is another one out there like this, I want it.

I love it. As an owner of several Internationals, none are “rust-free.” Rust on the inside of body panels is OE.

When I was in HS, I worked for a man that had one of these, but it was the sport utility model. He hated that slant four engine so much ,he yanked it out and shoehorned a 340 4bbl with a chrysler 4 speed into it. He claimed way more power and even better gas mileage. Of course when I drove it, I couldnt help but love hearing the secondaries of that Thermoquad open. Sounded like the hood was gonna get sucked in! It was a similar color as this one, but looked to applied with a broom. SLEEPER!! Ahh, the good old days…..

Never noticed this on Ebay before. ‘This listing was ended by the seller because the item was lost or broken’.
